Apple To Launch 7.85-Inch iPad in 2012 - Rumor

Digitimes' Max Wang and Steve Shen report that Apple is likely to launch a 7.85-inch iPad prior to the fourth quarter of 2012 in addition to a new iPad scheduled to be released at the end of the first quarter, according to sources in the supply chain.

Wang and Shen note that global shipments of tablet PCs are expected to reach 60 million units in 2011, of which 70% will be Apple's iPads. However, their insider sources tell them that in order to stay in front of increasing market competition, including the 7-inch Kindle Fire from Amazon and the launch of large-size smartphones from handset vendors, Apple has been persuaded to develop 7.85-inch iPads, with OEMs in the supply chain, including panel makers LG Display and AU Optronics (AUO), likely to begin production of the 7.85-inch models at the end of Q2 2012.

'Confirmed': Apple Building 3.5-Inch Tablet Computer

Tongue firmly planted in cheek, Forbes' Brian Caulfield deadpans that Apple is building a touchscreen computer with a 3.5-inch screen that will sell for as little as $199, run Apple's iOS software and serve as a contract-free version of the popular iPhone 4S.

Caulfield says that Forbes obtained one of the devices by paying an Apple employee a modest sum of money, and suggests that it coult could pose a threat to Sony and Nintendo's handheld gaming devices, will feature a multi-touch interface and the ability to download new software directly from Apple's online software store, just like the iPad.

Apple, of course, already sells this product. Its called the iPod Touch, introduced by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs himself on September 8, 2007.

"Which," says Caulfield, "makes speculation that Apple will introduce a new version of the iPad, with a 7.85-inch screen, sort of ridiculous."

Apple A5 Processor Produced At Texas Samsung Plant

Digital Trends' Geoff Duncan notes that a new report from Reuters finds Apple is now starting to get the A5 microprocessor brains used in its iPad 2 and iPhone 4S from a new 1.6 million square foot facility in Texas — owned by its marathon patent litigation corporate frenemy Samsung.

Samsung Shifts Apple A5 Chip Production To Texas

The Register's Anna Leach reports that Apple's A5 chips are now being made in Texas, not Asia as was its predecessor the A4, according to a report from Reuters, citing "people familiar with the operation".

The chips, that power the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, are being produced at Samsung's huge new 1.6 million square foot, $3.6bn (closer to $9bn, according to Austin Chamber of Commerce) fab in Austin, although the iOS devices the A5 powers are still assembled by Foxconn in China.

iPad - the Most Hated Gadget Ever?

Cult of Mac's Mike Elgan says that as it continues to leave in its wake an enormous body count of dead and dying products, the iPad, while consumers love it, has become an object of hatred for several major industries, and for very good reason.

As Elgan observes, the "Post PC era" was anticipated my many to be a turn of the tide that would lift all boats, with iPad dominating the high end of the market, but Android tablets also able to grab sales, through offering a variety of sizes, options and price points.

But that's not what happened.

Instead Apple has established an unshakable lead, with no other company other than Amazon able to bleed off a significant share, with the vast disparity between expectations for non-iPad touch tablets and the ugly reality, wreakiing havoc and possibly even wrecking companies and transforming industries, with Android tablet makers are confronted with the rock-and-a-hard-place choice between making a little money on each tablet and selling few, or losing money on each tablet and selling many - a horrible state of affairs for the tablet industry, unless youre Apple or Amazon.

However, Elgan notes that the consumer tablet industry isn't the only one being decimated by the iPad. So is the
specialty niche aviation "electronic flight bag" industry that makes expensive, dedicated tablets for pilots, the established toy industry in light of the iPad being the number one most requested "toy" this Christmas this year, and of course the PC industry, which has had its breakfast eaten by sales cannibalization as more users switch primarily or even exclusively to the iPad as a computing platform, with the netbook category as a whole imperiled.

And with a new rumor out of the Far East last week, that Apple is fixing to replace the iPod Touch with a 7.85-inch iPad, likely to sell at the same $199 price point as the current 3.5-inch iPod Touch, Elgan predicts that Amazon will soon have new reason to hate the iPad too.

Research in Motion Troubles Continue

The Canadian Press's LuANN LaSALLE reports that Canada's Research in Motion, former darling of the smartphone industry, pleaded for understanding from investors last week as it reported mediocre financial results and delay of a new generation of BlackBerry smartphones the company is pinning its future hopes on - with projected release moved back to mid-2012.

LaSALLE notes that RIM has faded to a 10-per cent share of the American smartphone market, has been forced to cut 2,000 jobs, has watched as its tablet spectacularly underperformed sales expectations.

Co-chairmen James Balsillie said he and Mikle Lazaridis, have asked for their salaries cut to $1 each immediately as they work to turn the company around.

RIM's Top Bosses Slash Salaries To $1 A Year

The Register's Brid-Aine Parnell says troubled BlackBerry maker RIM appears to have been listening to its irate shareholders - promising a "comprehensive review" of the company while top shareholders and CEO-cum-chairmen Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis cut their wages to a dollar a year.

Parnell notes that RIM stocks on the NASDAQ have swooned from $32.49 at the end of August to $15.13 last week.

Apple Primed To Pick Off Android, Windows, Blackberry Users With iPad 3

Forbes' Trefis Team reports that more than 40 percent of smartphone owners who use Research in Motion BlackBerry, Microsoft Windows Phone and Google Android platforms prefer Apple's iPad to tablets from their current smartphone operating system makers, according to a recent survey, and that the launch of a new iPad 3 in the next 3-4 months should make sure there is no slowdown in the iPad sales.

RIP, RIM

WinSuperSite's Paul Thurrott says that one product he's routinely ignored over the years, aside from the occasional news story, is RIM's Blackberry family of mobile handsets, and that every time he's explored Blackberry and the company that makes it he's been repelled, onserving thst even RIM was successful, he never understood the hold they had over governments, businesses, and even some users.

And now, Thurrott says, RIM is dead, and it's time for us all to simply recognize this fact and move on, noting that while as recently as two years ago, Blackberry accounted for almost 50 percent of the US market for smartphones, while today it controls just 9 percent.

He points out that in this past year, RIM introduced a tablet device that didn't even have an email application, has been obliged to sell off inventory at a $300 (three-fifths) and still haven't updated it to add an email application, and that the company has introduced almost 40 new smartphone models since Apple released its original iPhone, and even Blackberry experts have a hard time figuring out the differences, citing a RIM executive actually saying last week that the company didn't know how many Blackberry models it currently sells.

He notes that the lustre is off Blackberry's two remaining core differentiators, security and its proprietary network,
and he's glad he never wasted time covering this junk.
