Using An iPad As A Serious Writing System

ZNet's James Kendrick says he's been using the iPad for writing work for almost two years and frequently gets asked howhe does it. This guide explains what I do and why it works well.

Kendrick affirms that the iPad has revolutionized the way he approaches his writing and is still serving him well. He says he's tried number of tablets for writing work, but always comes back to the iPad for a number of reasons.

Reasons he finds that it works so well in this capacity include:
• Long battery life
• Retina display which he says makes it possible to work for hours without eyestrain.
• LTE frees him from the wi-fi hotspot, which is liberating.
• Small package - he can carry the iPad in the keyboard case in the smallest bag possible, making it easy to move around.
• Taller display - the iPad's screen is taller than other tablets with a wider screen.
• Focus - having multiple apps on the screen at once can be nice, but for writing the one app on the screen eliminates distraction.
• Speed to production - he can take the iPad out of the bag and be where he left off in the last session in just a few seconds.
• Security - all of his work is in the cloud so he loses nothing if the iPad is stolen, and he can deactivate it remotely if that ever happened.

Kendrick's current iPad setup is an iPad 4 with 64GB of memory (which he says is overkill) and integrated LTE., paired with a keyboard case to facilitate text entry. He says he's tried most popular keyboard cases for the iPad and settled on the ZAGG Profolio+ that he says has a fantastic keyboard that supports fast touch typing and even backlit keys.

He prefers the Chrome browser, his main writing app on the iPad is Evernote, and he uses Office2 HD to access Microsoft Office documents.

However, Kendrick concedes that his new MacBook Air is coming along for his work outings quite a bit lately due to its light weight and 9+ hour battery life, and there are also are other solutions that are cheaper, faster, and more capable than his iPad with keyboard, but it's solid system for a writer that has no compromises yet is full-featured enough to write thousands of words a day. He likes using it and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

iPhone 5 The Most Hated Handset?

A report by the Daily Mail's Victoria Woollaston says that while the majority of people love the Samsung Galaxy S4, a study finds that the iPhone 5 was the most criticised handset on social networks, with one in five comments about the phone negative following its launch in 2012, while the S4 received the fewest complaints on Twitter and blogs according to figures from analysts We Are Social.

Who Says Apple's iPhone 5 Is The 'Most-hated Smartphone'?

Fortune's resident Apple-watcher Philip Elmer-DeWitt debunks the We Are Social study, which he says struck him as unlikely, given that the "most-hated smartphone" is also the world's best-selling smartphone, and that after digging was unable to find any such study on the We Are Social, and no way of determining whether the research was theirs or someone else's. (a call to their New York office went unanswered).

However, even taking alleged the data at face value, Elmer DeWitt notes that "Launch day conversations" about the iPhone 5 outnumbered those about the Galaxy S4 by more than 12 to 1, while comments with a "negative connotation" about the iPhone 5 outnumbered the Galaxy S4 by less than 2 to 1, and it shouldn't surprise anyone that more of that chatter had "negative connotations," given the fact that the iPhone 5 came with a controversial new power socket and a new Map app that compared unfavorably to Google Maps, but that nowhere do the phrases "most-hated" or "most-loved" appear, and he suspects that spin was the work of some provocative sensationalist at the Daily Mail's London office.

The Artist Currently Known As Prince No Social Media Fan

V Magazine's Vanessa Grigoriadis reports that Prince, the artist formerly known as a glyph, is not a communications tech aficionado, and has for example has shunned the PR opportunities afforded by the latest tech almost completely, refusing to put his videos on YouTube and offering new music mostly for sale on his websites, as well as banning the use or even display of cameras and cellphones at interviews.

Asked by Ms. Grigoriadis if he has an iPhone, Prince, 55, responds: "Are you serious? Hell, no.... Where is my phone? Can you call my phone? Oh, I can't find it....."

Apple Looks To Automakers As Another iOS Market

Fortune's Doron Levin notes that Apple is directing its attention to a new generation of consumers that cares more about megabytes of storage and clock speeds than horsepower or torque, (much to the dismay of the preceding generations of automobile aficionados), and ponders whether the iPhone help automakers sell cars, or will cars help Apple sell more gadgets?

Perhaps both, he says, noting that Apple recently revealed that it's working with several automakers, including General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, and Hyundai, to integrate its new iOS 7 operating system into cars with a product called "iOS in the Car," allowing Siri voice commands to control navigation, entertainment choices, phone and functions such as heating and air conditioning, apps appearing on the dashboard screen, and allowing driver or passenger to buy and download music or order merchandise via Amazon.

What's unclear, says Levin is whether broader digital and wireless capability in cars will add to driver distraction or, conversely, increase safety by letting drivers keep their eyes on the road while letting Siri read them texts and email. (Note: science informs us that when it comes to driver distraction, hands-free is not a substantial improvement over handheld -- it doesn't so much matter where your eyes are pointing as what your brain is focused on. Ed.).

Levin observes that Ford, which collaborates with Microsoft on its infotainment systems, is a major carmaker that so far hasn't been mentioned in the same breath as Apple. However he speculates that if Apple technology proves helpful in boosting sales or pricing of a particular car model, especially one favored by younger buyers, Ford would likely consider how it might also offer the iPhone format, although carmakers will also be mindful that Google's Android platform outsells the iOS in raw numbers. However, the iOS skews toward a coveted higher-end and wealthier demographic.
