Android Handsets Outsell iPhones, But Apple Gets More Profit Than All Competitors Combined

The Register's Rik Myslewski notes that Apple rakes in more profits from its iPhones than do all Android phonemakers combined, despite the fact that Android phones command an 81 percent market share to iPhone's 12.1 percent according to IDC metrics.

However, another report from Canaccord Genuity reveals that despite Android's overwhelming market-share lead, Apple's operating margin of 33 percent enabled it to haul in 56 percent of all handset profit. Ergo: market share does not equal profit share, with a sizable proportion of those Android phones being cheapo devices with razor-thin profit margins, and IDC noting that average selling price for Android phones is steadily sinking, down 12.5 percent in Q3/13 alone to an average of $317.

Apple Design Goes Far Beyond Shelf Appeal

The Seattle Times' Jeff Carlson notes that since its founding, and especially following the introduction of the original iMac, Apple has established itself as a company synonymous with good design. Its products are eye-catching and innovative, but not always in the ways and for reasons that most people expect, and looking at the products Apple has announced at the end of 2013 reveals a different and much more effective use of design than that early company-saving iMac starting with the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and improved iMacs, slimmer MacBook Pros thst debuted in October, along with two new iPads: the iPad mini with a high-resolution Retina screen, and the iPad Air, a new design for the large-screen iPad.

Carlson observes that unnlike most computer makers, Apple doesn't need to rely on shelf appeal to compete against other similar machines in an electronics store, and that while its one thing to feel good about a device, more important is the physical feel of interaction with it, which is where the new iPad Air and the Retina iPad mini make an impact.

He suggests (and you editor agrees) that the epitome of Apple design is the iPad Air, a realization of what he imagines Apple set out to design with the first iPad, but couldnt because of the components available at the time.

Longtime Applewatcher Pundit Explains Why He Just Bought a Googlephone

Kirkville blogger Kirk McElhearn reports that he's bought an Android phone after having been an iPhone user for years. He notes that first smartphone was an iPhone and he's never been tempted to switch, and he didn't buy this Googlephone to switch either, but to see how the other half lives.

Worst case, he says he'll be able to use it as an emergency phone, but is planning to spend some time with it and write a few articles comparing it to the iPhone.

Still Got A First-gen iPad? - Even A Three-year-old iPad Still Has A Lot To Offer

Computerworld's Michael deAgonia notes that in the life of every device, there's a moment when you start to wonder whether it's still useful. But "old" is not the same as "obsolete," and there's still plenty of uses for a first-generation iPad.

PocketFinder GPS Technologies and NASCAR Nation at Season Finale

Location Based Technologies, Inc., maker of the PocketFinder vehicle and personal GPS devices that allow others to see and track location information, announced Friday that the company will continue its NASCAR based awareness campaign with a doubleheader event for the NASCAR championship weekend at Homestead-Miami Florida.

LBT was partnered with NASCAR, DJ and Timmy in last weekend's races at Homestead. Many NASCAR fans now have the ability to locate their cars, boats, RVs, ATVs and people that they love with the touch of a button from anywhere and at any time.

For the final race events of 2013 season, Sprint Cup driver and 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series Rookie of the Year Champion Timmy Hill drove the #23 PocketFinder Chevrolet in the Ford Ecoboost 300, and two-time Canadian NASCAR series Champion DJ Kennington drove the #84 Chevrolet in the Ford Ecoboost 200 with both events featured at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

"These races feature the best of the best and finalize the 2013 standings," said Dave Morse, CEO of LBT. LBT is proud to be partnered with NASCAR, DJ and Timmy in this weekends races at Homestead. Many NASCAR fans now have the ability to locate their cars, boats, RVs, ATVs and people that they love with the touch of a button from anywhere and at any time."

Race events including practice and qualifying laps featured the PocketFinder vehicles and were televised on ESPN and FOX Sports 1, as well as broadcast live on MRN radio and Sirius satellite channel #90.

"This weekend we are excited to again feature PocketFinder to NASCAR fans in our continued awareness campaign. We have Timmy and DJ back in the cars for a back to back effort to represent the company and their great tracking technologies. What race fan wouldnt want to know where their car, truck, RV or toy was right from their phone?" says Rick Ware of Rick Ware Racing (RWR), which has competed in every NASCAR sanctioned series, ARCA Series, the WMA Motocross Series, AMA Arenacross, Motocross and Supercross Series, Summer X-Games and United Sports Car Series.

PocketFinder on Track to Have Its Best Holiday Sales in Company History

Location Based Technologies, Inc. projects that sales for PocketFinder and PocketFinder Vehicle products will set a company record for sales during the holiday months of October, November and December. The PocketFinder sales represent a 270%-360% increase over the same period during the previous year.

"Our commercial sales have been growing strongly for some time, but now our retail sales are starting to accelerate," Dave Morse notes. "This will be the best retail sales during any consecutive three month period in the history of our company. There is a clear disconnect between the growth trajectory of our company and the markets valuation."

PocketFinder personal and vehicle devices give users the ability to 'see' where their children and favorite vehicles are from anywhere and at any time, worldwide.
