iOS 7 on 18% of iOS Devices 24 Hours After Public Release - Chitika Insights

Chitika insights notes that on September 18th, 2013 Apple pushed iOS 7 live, making updates available over-the-air and through iTunes. Aside from a new look and feel, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system offers a significant number of new features; such as control center, automated app updating, and AirDrop, among others. Many of these new features were well received by users, and demand on Apple's servers caused some to experience very slow download times or errors on launch day. While the OS itself seems to be a welcome change for Apple's users, how did the server load, along with slightly narrowed eligibility for the upgrade impact iOS 7 adoption as compared to iOS 6?

After being available to consumers for just under 24 hours, Chitika Insights tapped into Chitika Ad network data to answer this question. To determine the success of Apple' latest mobile operating system, Chitika Insights tracked the adoption rate of iOS 7 across all iOS devices.

To quantify this study, Chitika Insights examined a sample of millions of North American iOS-based online ad impressions from within the Chitika Ad network, ranging from September 18th to September 19th 2013. The growth rate of iOS 7 was then compared to total iOS Web usage using a time series to illustrate the rate of adoption of the new OS. For comparison, they overlaid the 24-hour iOS 6 adoption data they had catalogued last year. Graphs depicting both data sets can be seen below:

image

image

Pre-release iOS 7 exhibited low levels of usage due to beta-version activity from developers. Following iOS 7's public release the afternoon of September 18th, adoption levels soared despite high loads on Apple's servers. About 24 hours following the start of the public rollout, adoption reached levels above 18%. This level of adoption represents another proverbial feather in the cap of Apple, as it bests the impressive adoption rates of iOS 6 in the same time period last year. For some competitive comparison, Google reports that as of September 4th, 2013, adoption of Jelly Bean, which was released in July 2012, comprises about 45% of the Android ecosystem. Judging by past trends, its likely that iOS 7 will surpass that mark very soon.

How Fast Are Consumers Adopting iOS 7? Details And Data Form Tapjoy's Network

Tapjoy's Patrick Seybold reports that Tapjoy has been monitoring its network of more than 200 million iOS devices to find out how quickly consumers are adopting iOS across the globe.

In short, they find that:
-iOS 7 is being adopted at a significantly faster rate than iOS 6, as we saw it took 20 hours for iOS 6 to reach 10% adoption on our network, where iOS 7 took only 8 hours.
- Just 24 hours after iOS 7 became available, 25% of iPhone owners have updated to iOS 7 compared to just 12% of iPod and 15% of iPad users.
- North America seems to be the fastest region to embrace the new OS with 28%; Latin America is close behind at 26% and EMEA at 22%. Asia Pacific, at 14% has been the slowest to adopt iOS 7, which shouldn't be a huge surprise since they were slowest to adopt iOS 6

It may be too early to tell whether fans will fully embrace the changes made in iOS 7, but if Tapscape's network data and the surge to download the new OS is any indication, consumers are clearly interested and quick to give it a try.

Apples iOS 7 became available on Wednesday, Sept. 18, and the media seems pretty enamored with it. CNN called it "a whole new iPhone experience" and the LA Times said that it "could be a bigger change than iPhone 5s and 5c." TechCrunch had a somewhat more tempered but still upbeat view, describing it as "A Major Makeover That Delivers, But Takes Some Getting Used To." However, the question is, are consumers as excited about the operating system as the media?

Early data seem to indicate that they are.

image

Based on Tapjoy's network-wide data, which has a reach of over 200 million unique iOS consumers per month, iOS 7 is being adopted at a rate much faster than iOS 6 was. For instance, it took 20 hours for iOS 6 to reach 10% adoption, while iOS 7 reached it in less than half the time - in a mere 8 hours. Twenty-four hours after its initial availability, iOS 7 stands at 22% adoption, while iOS 6 was only at 15% after the same time period. Interestingly, it appears iOS 7 growth is happening purely at the expense of iOS 6; in other words, if you didnt bother to upgrade to iOS 6 in the first place, then youre not likely to download iOS 7 on the first day. See the chart below to compare the progression of each OS.

image

A deeper dive into the data tells us which device types are being updated the fastest. Historical data shows that iPhone owners have upgraded to the latest operating system versions faster than their iPod and iPad owning counterparts. At the start of the day Wednesday, 87.7% of iPhone owners on Tapjoy's network were using iOS 6, while only 82.2% and 82.7% of iPod and iPad owners, respectively, had made the update to iOS 6 from an earlier version. Today, approximately 24 hours after iOS 7 became available, 25% of iPhone owners are using it, compared to 12% of iPod and 15% of iPad owners.

image

A look into the regional breakdown tells an interesting story as well. North America seems to be the fastest region to embrace the new OS, with 28% of Tapjoy users here already having updated. Latin America is close behind, at 26%, with Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) at 22%. However, the EMEA numbers appear to be brought down by Africa, as Europe and the Middle East would be closer to, or perhaps ahead of, North Americas numbers if broken out separately. The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region is the slowest to adopt iOS 7 (currently at 14%), which comes as no surprise since they were also the slowest to adopt iOS 6.

image

Tapjoy also took a look at which specific countries are embracing iOS 7 the fastest. Throwing out the smallish outliers like the Aland Islands, where iOS 7 has already been adopted by 95% of Tapjoy users on this tiny archipelago in the Baltic Sea. Among major countries on their network Tapjoy sees that users in South Korea are the fastest to update so far, with Brazil, the United Kingdom, Mexico and then the United States in hot pursuit.

It may be too early to tell whether fans will fully embrace the changes made in iOS 7, but if Tapjoy's network data and the surge to download the new OS is any indication, consumers are clearly interested in giving it a spin at the very least.

Fastest Smartphone? iPhone 5S by Wide Margin

Tapscape's Ronald Carlson notes that while nothing will shut the naysayers up, smartphone performance tests from Anandtech's Anand Lal Shimpi, the benchmark source for unbiased reviews (http://www.anandtech.com/show/7335/the-iphone-5s-review/2), should the iPhone 5S is the fastest smartphone and not just by a little.

The dual-core A7 is now the fastest SoC weve tested under SunSpider, even outpacing Qualcomms Snapdragon 800 and ARMs Cortex A15, writes Shimpi on his AnandTech blog. Apple doesnt quite hit the 2x increase in CPU performance here, but its very close at a 75 percent performance increase compared to the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5s Slaughters Quad-core Rivals In Performance Tests Despite Dual-core CPU And Just 1GB Of RAM

BGR's Zach Epstein observes that its easy to look at things like CPU cores and clockspeeds and make assumptions, but dozens of factors contribute to a smartphone's performance. Case in point: when the 1.3GHz dual-core A7 processor powering the new iPhone 5s is lined up on paper against quad- and eight-core CPUs clocked at more than 2GHz being used by Apple's rivals, one might assume that the beastly chipsets powering various Android phones would have the upper hand. As it turns out, however, that assumption couldn't be further from the truth.

Epstein notes that when Apple announced last week that its new iPhone 5s is powered by a new 64-bit A7 processor, people scoffed and said that without 4GB of RAM, the upgrade would barely make a difference, but if you think core counts, RAM and clockspeeds tell the whole story, you're in for a surprise - Anandtech found that the iPhone 5s bested leading rival smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S4 and LG G2 in each and every CPU performance test performed, often by a fairly wide margin.

WinSuperSite's Paul Thurrott Posts Compete iOS 7 Report - He Likes It

Your editor is always interested to see what WinSuperSite's Paul Thurrott has to say about Apple stuff, and he notes that with iOS 7, for the first time since iOS was still called iPhone OS, Apple has significantly updated the platform, both visually and functionally. His verdict: while there are certainly some issues, it's mostly successful, and that will be troubling to Apple's competitors.

Thurrott notes that iOS 7 is still not his ideal of a mobile OS, still featuring the same "whack a mole" approach to apps, where you move in and out of specific apps to get things done, and it has no truly integrated experiences. However, he says iOS 7 does provide an important, although incomplete visual refresh to what was a very outdated UI. And there are some important changes under the hood.

The iOS 7 Review - Anandtech

Anandtech's Brian Klug & Saumitra Bhagwat say there's no doubt about it, this iOS update is one of the largest in Apple's history, and in the wake of the iPhone 5 launch, there was a considerable amount of criticism that iOS visual design was beginning to get stale. The core of the interface hadn't really changed in either visual appearance or function. With iOS 7, those pundits get their wishes granted, as almost every part of the OS gets some kind of change.

iPhone 5 Is Dead. Long Live iPhone (S 5S AND 5C)

iFixIt's Julia says that when the iPhone 5 was released, Apple dubbed it the biggest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone. A mere year after the fanfare, Apple has moved on to bigger biggest things. As of last week, the iPhone 5 is obsolete - replaced by two new, highly anticipated versions of the iPhone.

She notes that if public fervor is any indication, there is a lot to be excited about. The new phones come in a whirligig of color choices, from Playdough green to a luxurious gold. And the iPhone 5s features a lot of really interesting new features. Everything from a new 64-bit A7 processor and a fingerprint unlocking system to an improved camera.

Consequently, you may find that your iPhone 4S or your iPhone 5 looks just a little less shiny these days, but Julia notes that Australia's The Checkout, a consumer affairs investigation show, offers a few reasons why you shouldnt: namely, you probably don't need to. After all, your iPhone 5 is just as good now as it was before Apple pulled it off the shelves last week.

Moreover, she asks why do we buy incredibly expensive electronics that we only love until the next product release? And why do we continue to support companies that design hardware to be hard-to-fix? Especially when 20 to 50 million metric tons of e-waste are thrown away worldwide each year.

iPad 5, iPad mini 2: Three Colors Coming?

tapscape's ronald carlson says that a new rumor has it that the new iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 will, as with the new iPhone 5s, be available in Gold, White and Space Gray color options, based of leaked reports that iPad replacement parts in Gold, White and Space Gray are beginning to show up in Apples Asian supply chain, and photos of bags of what are alleged to be iPad 5 and iPad mini case components in three different colors.

On the other hand, Carlson notes that SlashGear is predicting that the iPad mini 2 will come in the same two colors (black, white) as rhe original, but concurs with the rumor that the iPad 5 will be availale in the three new iPhone 5S colors.

9To5Mac's Ben Lovejoy says that French site NWE, which has a photo of what it believes to be a Space Gray casing for the iPad min, has a decent track-record in leaked parts report accuracy, and that it seems likely that Apple would adopt the same colors for the new iPads as for the iPhone 5s.

Sapphire Could Be Used In New iPad - Digitimes Sources

Digitimes' Julian Ho and Adam Hwang report that Apple is expected to extend the use of sapphire glass home keys to its new 9.7-inch iPad and 7.9-inch iPad mini, expected to be launched in October, and to possibly further adopt sapphire for making touch screen covers for its new iPhone to be launched in 2014, according to Taiwan-based sapphire makers.

Ho and Hwang note that sapphire is also used in making covers of iPhone 5s fingerprint-recognizing home keys, according to their sources, and that Apple in March 2013 filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office an application concerning high-temperature lamination of sapphire layers, but that their sources also caution that cost of sapphire ingots could be a major problem, with the cost of the iPhone's sapphire covers being as much as five times those for iPhone covers made from other materials.

BBM Available for Android on September 21 and iPhone on September 22

A BlackBerry blog (http://blogs.blackberry.com/2013/09/bbm-for-android-iphone/) reports that BlackBerry's BBM mobile social network will begin rolling out for Android and iPhone customers around the world beginning September 21. BBM was previously exclusive to BlackBerry smartphones, and it will be available as a free download in Google Play and the App Store.

BBM for Android and iPhone features:

BBM Chat
-Enjoy real, immediate conversations with friends on Android, iPhone and BlackBerry smartphones. Not only does BBM let you know that your message has been delivered and read, it also shows you that your friend is responding to the message.

-More than chat With BBM you can share files on your phone such as photos and voice notes, all in an instant.

- Multi-person chats are a great way to invite contacts to chat together. BBM Groups lets you invite up to 30 friends to chat together, and go a step further than multi-chat by sharing photos and schedules. And, with Broadcast Message, you can send a message out to all your BBM contacts at once.

Post Updates and stay in the know
- BBM lets you post a personal message, profile picture and your current status, and lets your contacts know instantly in Updates.

Your unique PIN
- Every BBM user has a unique PIN that maintains your privacy, so you dont have to give out your phone number or email address to a new or casual contact.

BBM gives you a private social network for active, real conversations and it has more than 60 million customers on BlackBerry alone. The overwhelming majority use BBM an average of 90 minutes per day. BBM customers collectively send and receive more than 10 billion messages each day, nearly twice as many messages per user per day as compared to other mobile messaging apps. Messages on BBM are typically read within seconds, reflecting how truly engaged BBM customers are.

Its immediate. BBM is always on so you are always connected. And because messages on BBM are typically delivered and read within seconds, its the closest thing to a live conversation.

You trust it. BBM always tells you that messages are delivered and read. BBM conversations come alive on a private network you can count on.

You control it. BBM allows you to choose your contacts and how you share your information. BBM uses a PIN so you dont have to give anyone your phone number or email address.

In a recent press release, Andrew Bocking, Executive Vice President for BBM at BlackBerry said:

"BBM is a very engaging messaging service that is simple to use, easy to personalize and has an immediacy that is necessary for mobile communications. With more than a billion Android, iOS, and BlackBerry smartphones in the market, and no dominant mobile instant messaging platform, this is absolutely the right time to bring BBM to Android and iPhone customers."

BBM will be available as a free download for Android smartphones running Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean (Android 4.x) beginning at 7AM EDT on September 21. BBM for iPhones running iOS 6 and iOS 7 will become available for each market on the App Store schedule of 12:01 AM local time on September 22. BuQu Tech to Launch Kickstarter Campaign Around ChargeSmart - Intelligent Case for iPhone 5, 5s Extends Life of Internal Battery

BuQu Tech (http://www.BuQuTech.com) has announced that the company will launch a Kickstarter campaign on October 1, aimed at bringing to market ChargeSmart, a patent-pending smart battery case for the iPhone 5 and 5S. With a funding goal of $55,000, the campaign will run through October 31.

The company made the announcement on the eve of Pepcoms Holiday Spectacular, an early look at whats likely to be the hottest consumer electronics gear this holiday season.

Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com) is a new way to fund creative projects everything from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology. Kickstarter is full of projects, big and small, that are brought to life through the direct support of the online community. Since launching in 2009, more than 4.8 million people have pledged in excess of $787 million, funding more than 48,000 creative projects.

ChargeSmart from BuQu Tech will more than double the runtime of the smartphone while protecting it against everyday hazards like drops, bumps, and moisture. But it won't stop there: ChargeSmart's charging algorithms will extend the life of the phones internal battery by as much as 50 percent.

The ChargeSmart Kickstarter campaign will feature a tiered rewards system, acknowledging pledges at various levels with an attractive array of incentives and spiffs. Among the rewards: the battery case at a Kickstarter price below MSRP; an early adopter price below the Kickstarter price; a BuQu Tech exclusive portable mobile battery; and a combination of various BuQu Tech battery products. At the apex of the rewards ladder, an especially generous pledge will secure a trip to Las Vegas during CES.

"We're experts in smart power products with more than 25 years experience in portable power," says Ophir Marish, CEO of BuQu Tech. "What makes ChargeSmart different is that it will extend the life and performance of the iPhone's internal battery. ChargeSmart comes with an app, available for free from the Apple App Store, that will communicate with the ChargeSmart battery case, using proprietary charging algorithms to charge the iPhone's internal battery. The result? The iPhone's battery will run better, for longer."

"This isn't just theory," Marish continues. We've developed our algorithms by charging and discharging batteries thousands of times. The ChargeSmart app will also let you do cool stuff no other battery case can do."

The ChargeSmart Power Reserve feature will, for example, enable users to set aside any percentage of ChargeSmart's power that will not be used unless specifically activated - perfect for an emergency or just to ensure that the user has enough power to make it through the day. Users can also turn the battery case on and off, dim the LEDs, and see the real-time battery status for both ChargeSmart and the iPhone batteries, and the combined remaining run time between the two.

BuQu Tech most recently announced the expansion of its Magnetyze family of protective cases and magnetic charging systems and accessories to include the newly announced Apple iPhone 5S and 5C smartphones. Magnetyze by BuQu Tech applies patent-pending magnetics technology to keep iPhone and Android smartphones protected, charged and ready to grab and go.

BuQu Tech is a subsidiary of Battery-Biz Inc., the leading U.S.-based manufacturer and distributor of consumer electronic power accessories. The company was honored as an International CES Innovations 2013 Design and Engineering Awards Honoree for its Magnetyze magnetic charging system. Products entered in this prestigious program are judged by a preeminent panel of independent industrial designers, engineers and members of the media to honor outstanding design and engineering in cutting edge consumer electronics products across 29 product categories.
