Apple's A7 Looks Twice As Fast As A6 - At Least For Fractal Math
CNET's Stephen Shankland says a detailed look at the Frax app's 90 percent performance boost on the iPhone 5S shows why Apple's A7 chip isn't a marketing gimmick - even if the advantages aren't strictly because of a 64-bit design.
The app in question is Iter9's new Frax app for generating lavishly detailed fractal imagery by running mathematics calculations on both the CPU and GPU. It gets a major speed boost on the iPhone 5S, developer Ban Weiss says, evident in faster rendering times for the swirling psychedelic images laboriously calculated one pixel at a time.
Frax is currently a 32-bit app, but it runs 50 percent faster on the A7-powered iPhone 5s compared with the A6-powered iPhone 5, and when Weiss compiled the first 64-bit version, Frax ran 25 percent faster than the 32-bit version on the iPhone 5s. Together, that means the 64-bit app runs nearly 90 percent faster on an iPhone 5S than the 32-bit version on the iPhone 5. So there are real reasons to make the 64-bit move, as Frax can attest. A marketing gimmick the A7 is not.

iPhone 5c Selling Poorly, Apple Cuts More Than Half Capacity
CTECH, a Chinese language tech blog says (a tip of the hat to Google Trnslate) that due to its high price, the iPhone 5c is not selling well, and they cite insiders in Apple's ODM network informing them that Apple's internal sales for iPhone5c are not cause for too much hope. So because the actual dismal sales, Apple has begun to reduce iPhone5c capacity, average daily production to be cut in half from 300,000 to 150,000.
iPhone5c had previously been considered by Apple for cultivating sales in developing countries, especially China and India, but with an actual sales price only slightly less than for the iPhone5s almost the same, before iPhone5S, then iPhone5, as plastic body iPhone5C no particular highlights , it is difficult to attract users also natural.
They also note that iPhone5c poor sales have not been a bad thing for the consumer, since gray channel prices have dropped significantly over time.

As iPhone 5c Grey Market Prices Fall 30% In China, Apple Cuts Its Production In Half
Unwired View blogger Stasys Bielinis says when Apple announced the official price for iPhone 5c- $549 off-contract- it was a huge disappointment. It simply didnt fit with the narrative that had developed over the summer, that Apple is working on a cheap(ish) iPhone for China and other emerging/off-contract markets to boost its market share and unit sales volumes, but there was no way $549 phone will be able to do that.
And while Apple fan blogs were full of the reasons of why iPhone 5c is a great idea, it wasnt, at least for China, where iPhone 5c now looks as dumb an idea as it did at first glance. And while there are no official numbers yet, the data trickling in from Chinese grey market is not good.

Verizon Favoring Apple Another Year, According to ABI Research
ABI Research reports Apple is still not supporting SVLTE or SVDO. The IPhone 5s and 5c are variants of the original iPhone 5, only sporting new lower cost housing in the case of the 5c and a new application processor, sensor hub, and finger print ID in the 5s.
However, what both of the newly introduced products are clearly missing are improvements in Wi-Fi and LTE. While the latest offerings from competitors include 802.11ac (a Wi-Fi upgrade) and LTE-Advanced, Apple elected to stay with last years technology for both.
The RF section in the 5s does support additional bands for LTE which means it can be used in additional locations and with additional carriers but with the same performance as the iPhone 5. Even so, the most notable omission is for the variant carried by Verizon. Verizon has required its handset suppliers to support SVLTE and SVDO for some time now; however, Apple received a pass last year with the introduction of the iPhone 5 and it appears it has received another pass this year with the 5s and 5c.
"In order to support SVLTE or SVDO, a CDMA based phone must have two RF chains and most Verizon (a CDMA carrier) LTE phones do, with the iPhone as the exception. Apple appears to be the only handset manufacturer with enough clout to dictate handset specifications2 years running. It is understood that the selling power of Apple warrants some exceptions but we expected that after a year Apple would have included the capability in their iPhone 5 variantsthe 5s and 5c," comments Jim Mielke, VP of engineering, ABI Research.

Mariner Acquires and Updates MacGourmet, MacGourmet Deluxe, and iOS app
Mariner Software has acquired the popular applications MacGourmet, MacGourmet Deluxe, and MacGourmet Touch from Advenio, Inc. With this acquisition, Mariner is releasing a 4.0 version of MacGourmet Deluxe and MacGourmet. Additionally, MacGourmet Touch for iOS has been re-released as Gourmet iOS, which functions as a standalone or as a companion app, adding a free Cloud account for backup and syncing.

"Mariner and Advenio have been partners for a long time," says Michael Wray, president of Mariner. "We both came to the conclusion that for the products to grow, a change was needed. Mariner is pleased about the additions to our product line. Plus, our relationship with Advenio will continue in one form or another, and we are equally pleased about that too."
"I've been pretty much a 'start-up' type of developer, building companies and products up to a point," said Michael Dupuis, founder of Advenio. "Mariner will be able to bring a fresh perspective as well as continued development to these products. It will give me a chance to work on new projects, something I've wanted to do for a while, and I'm excited about that."

In addition to the acquisition, Mariner has released major updates to the desktop and iOS applications. MacGourmet Deluxe 4.0 is the newest version for the Mac having been changed from 32 bit to 64 bit architecture. The UI has been updated, and there are more ways of sharing, including Facebook and Twitter. The most significant change is the addition of cloud storage which will allow the user to transfer recipes between multiple Macs and iOS devices.

"With significant updates to the Mac application, the biggest improvement is the new iOS app," says Wray. "This app works standalone and allows the user to create, edit, and scale recipes as well as import recipes from popular recipe websites. The new free cloud account provides full backup and syncing. Users can import, create, edit, and scale recipes in the app and then see those changes in the desktop app or on other iOS devices. Our customers can expect to see more changes in both products in the near future."

MacGourmet Deluxe is available for sale and for trial from the Mariner Software website and various retail outlets and will sell for $49.95 USD. MacGourmet is also available for sale and for trial and will sell for $24.95. Minimum system requirements for MacGourmet and MacGourmet Deluxe is Mac OS 10.7 or higher.
