Windows RT Facing Pressure From Being Isolated By Third-Party Non Support

Digitimes' Monica Chen and Joseph Tsai reports that Microsoft's Windows RT operating system may fall to the same fate as Hewlett-Packard's (HP) webOS, as most brand vendors have already stopped developing related products, leaving Microsoft's second-generation Surface RT, the only Windows RT-based device in the next-generation tablet competition, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.

Chen and Tsai note that despite Microsoft's pushing measures like adding Outlook e-mail and calendar applications to its Surface RT, dropping Surface RT's prices in Japan, and providing students special prices for its Surface RT, to promote the ARM-based operating system, the efforts are unlikely to be answered with demand, theor sources deduce.

Global Socio-Economics As Represented In Smartphone Platform Choices

Blogger Benedict Evans has posted mashups of Twitter metadata showing intensity of smartphone usage against maps of various regions of the world produced by Mapbox. Blackberries are represented in purple) iPhones in red, and Androids in green.

For example, in Sao Paolo, Brazil, business people still use Blackberries, well off people have iPhones, and less rich people have Androids.

Africa is mostly Blackberry, and mostly South Africa, Nigeria, and a little Kenya. South Korea, home of Samsung, is Android everywhere, but with a cluster of iPhones in the centre of big cities. Bombay, India is mostly Android, but iPhone and Blackberry in the richest areas. In Central London, it's Blackberry on the roads, iPhone in the richest areas. Greater New York has a cluster of Blackberry in the Midtown business district, iPhone in the richer areas (and at JFK), with Android dominant in the more remote suburbs, In western Europe it's iPhone and some Blackberry in the UK, Android and some Blackberry in Spain, with Germany and France late coming to the party, while northern and central Italy has lots of iPhones.

Evans observes the obvious that the iPhone is more expensive than most of the phones on the market and this shapes the kind of people who buy it.

App Camp for Girls is Set to Lessen Gender Imbalance Among Developers

App Camp for Girls, a non-profit organization aimed at providing young girls an opportunity to conceptualize, design and build apps, has well exceeded its Indiegogo campaign goal of $50,000 just in time to launch its "beta" camp next week. The brainchild of Jean MacDonald, software developer and partner at Smile, a well-known company in the Mac and iOS developer community, App Camp for Girls is aimed at narrowing the gender gap in the software development industry, which is notoriously male-dominated. In a study conducted by the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economics and Statistics Administration published in August of 2011, research showed that, while women make up nearly half of the American workforce, they hold less than 25 percent of all STEM jobs.

"When you go to these big developer conferences, you have to look hard to find the women," MacDonald comments. "One year, while I was sitting in the audience - a sea of male faces - I thought, 'this is more than just male-dominated. It's almost exclusively male.' While the Department of Commerce's report shows that women represent less than a quarter of all STEM jobs, an already low percentage, that number becomes even lower when it comes to female mobile developers. A study conducted by Appcelerator, a software developer, and research firm IDC shows the percentage of female mobile developers is closer to just 4%, a statistic similar to what's been unofficially reported for WWDC. There are a lot of theories about why this is, but I just wanted to do something obvious to change it."

App Camp for Girls provides an encouraging space for young girls ages 12-14 to learn how to build apps from the ground up, allowing them to learn from female professionals and see app development as a viable career choice. Since its official launch on June 4, 2013, the campaign has taken the inter-webs by storm, with promotional support from John Gruber of Daring Fireball and garnering major backing from the likes of Matt Mullenweg, founder of WordPress, and Brad Feld, managing director of the Foundry Group and chair of the National Center for Women and Information Technology.

"If more girls get exposure to the creativity and fun involved in making apps, we can start to shift the balance," says Kelly Guimont, an editor for The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) and volunteer counselor. "Software development is a hugely important part of our economy and our culture - today and for the foreseeable future. We want women to be part of that future."

"Equal parts geeky and fun," the App Camp formula consists of dividing girls into project teams led by a female iOS developer, with help from other women ranging from designers and testers to support specialists and more. After brainstorming apps, campers will sketch out and storyboard ideas, learning how apps are built in Xcode and getting hands-on time with Xcode Storyboards. In addition to learning how to customize the content of their apps, the girls will have the opportunity to design icons and write App Store descriptions while figuring out who their target audience is. On the last day of camp, the teams will pitch their apps to a panel of female angel investors, giving them a chance to receive valuable feedback and learn more about the business side of app development.

App developer and volunteer counselor Natalie Osten adds, "Stepping into a room full of men when you're the only woman can be a little bit intimidating. App Camp for Girls will build self-esteem along with critical thinking and technical skills. The result will be inspired young women who are excited about app development and realize, 'Hey I can do that!'"

App Camp for Girls Sessions:
The beta session of App Camp for Girls is filled and will be held from June 24-28 in Portland, Oregon at TaborSpace. For information on attending the regular session held from August 19-23, please fill out the Prospective Camper Interest Form.

With experience and an established program, the App Camp will move forward over the coming year with plans to expand the camp for Summer 2014 to accommodate more girls and a wider age group, and to build the organization to reach beyond Portland to other cities. MacDonald comments, "Our goal is to grow our non-profit organization into a national force, with programs in multiple cities, helping thousands of girls."

Pocket Mariner's SeaNav App Updated To Provide Boaters Even More Accurate Charting And Navigation

Pocket Mariners recently launched SeaNav app, with versions for both the US and UK/Ireland, has been updated to offer a more complete charting and navigation toolkit for boaters. To improve navigation and collision avoidance when out of reach of cell phone coverage, SeaNav - together with Pocket Mariner's Boat Beacon app - can now also use on-board live VHF AIS data feeds. The app also now enables sailors to jump directly to specific locations using latitude and longitude searches and has been extended for use on iPods as well as iPhone and iPad.

image

SeaNav was designed to enable boaters to explore, plan and navigate their boating trips in real-time and high-resolution using the latest up to date Digital Vector Marine charts covering the US coastlines and Great Lakes or the UK and Ireland. Pocket Mariner has successfully completed sea trials of the new local AIS feature with Lowrance, Simrad and B&G's GoFree wireless systems, as well as with easyAIS and Digital Yacht.

Robert Langford-Wood, Product Manager for GoFree Technology says: "Applications such as SeaNav and Boat Beacon, when combined with GoFree wireless, allow boaters to make the most out of their Lowrance, Simrad and B&G chartplotters and AIS systems away from the helm. It means that every member of the crew can have a navigators eye view, increasing safety and enjoyment out on the water - a great innovation!"

SeaNav works best when paired with Pocket Mariner's Boat Beacon, which has become a popular app among sailors for its simple-to-use location sharing and real-time Map View - of both the users and other nearby boats via AIS. Together, SeaNav and Boat Beacon provide a powerful set of charting, navigation and location-sharing tools. While Boat Beacon provides SeaNav with its AIS data and alarms, Boat Beacon gets marine charts and routes from SeaNav. The two apps share hot-jump buttons that ensure they are both on the same location and at the same zoom level on the map.

Key features of SeaNav include:
• Route Planning and real time tracking including Waypoints, SOG, COG, ETA, CTE etc.
• Route and Track export, import and sharing.
• Charts downloaded and stored on device so they work without mobile coverage!
• Seamless fast panning and zooming across charts.
• Live AIS Ship positions overlaid from Pocket Mariners Boat Beacon app.
• Configurable layers; buoys, lights, depths, rocks, wrecks, anchorage areas etc.
• Automatic Chart updates.

SeaNav has two versions, SeaNav US which uses NOAA charts providing complete coverage of USA and Great Lakes and free chart updates for life. SeaNav UK uses UKHO Admiralty charts and includes the complete set of charts for the UK and Ireland plus a year of free chart updates in the one-off price. New versions of the app with charts for other countries and regions are in the works.

Both versions are available from the App Store for iPhone, iPad, and - in this latest version - on an iPod touch, for US$9.99 and Ł9.99 in the UK.
