Apple Patents Suggest Thunderbolt Coming To iOS Devices

This will be huge if it's true. BGR's Todd Haselton reports that The United States Patent and Trademark Office recently published three Thunderbolt related patents that suggest Apple may have plans to build Intel's Thunderbolt connections into its iOS devices, and may build its own cabling technology that gives it exclusive rights to how Thunderbolt technology might be built into portable devices. Thunderbolt ports would allow for faster data transfers on the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, as well as shorter charging times.

iPhone 4S Consumes Data Twice As Fast As iPhone 4

The Globe and Mail's Tarmo Virki reports that Apple's new iPhone 4S consumes on average twice as much data as the previous iPhone iPhone 4 model and even more than Apple's current iPad tablets due to increasing use of online services like the virtual personal assistant Siri, according to a new study by telecom network technology firm Arieso.

Arieso researchers found that Phone 4S users transfer on average three times more data than users of the older iPhone 3G model which was used as the benchmark, while data usage of the immediately previous (still available at entry level) iPhone 4 modelwas only 1.6 times higher than the iPhone 3G, and iPad 2 tablets consume 2.5 times more data than the iPhone 3G.

The takeaway is that the latest generation of smartphones is increasingly stressing available carrier bandwidth as applications become slicker and average personal usage of videos intensifies, and wireless operators are struggling with increasingly congested and clogged telecom networks.

The iPhone 4S is perceived by to be a data hog thanks to of Siri, the voice driven personal-assistant and search app.

iPads Replace Paper Manuals For Air Force Unit

InformationWeek's Elizabeth Montalbano reports that The U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) plans to procure 2,861 black iPad2 touchscreen computers from an authorized Apple reseller on which to maintain and update the Department of Defense's (DOD's) Flight Information Publications (FLIP) via a "global electronic update infrastructure," according to a notice posted on FedBizOpps.gov, and plans to do away with paper-based flight information and technical manuals and transfer them to iPads for nearly 3,000 of its personnel in a cost-cutting measure.

The move follows similar ones by the commercial aviation industry to move from paper-based flight manuals to electronic ones stored and accessed on mobile devices - usually iPads.

Sub-$199 Google Tablet PC Believed To Target Kindle Fire

Digitimes' Monica Chen and Joseph Tsai report that Google's rumored own-brand tablet PC is more likely to target Amazon's 7-inch Kindle Fire as its major competitor rather than attempting to compete directly against Apple's iPad, according to industry sources, who believe that Google will launch its own-brand tablet PC in March-April, featuring a 7-inch panel and Android 4.0 at a price lower than US$199 to compete against Amazon.

Siri Is All Hype Says Pundit

Forbes Contributor Panos Mourdoukoutas notes that a while back he purchased an Acura SUV (HMC) that came with a built-in GPS with voice recognition system. He says he thought it was the coolest thing at the time, and found himself going out of his way to use voice commands just for fun, even though in most cases it would've been easier juat do things manually. However, Mourdoukoutas says that nowadays the novelty has worn off and he barely uses the system.

He forecasts a similar fate for Apple's voice recognition toy Siri, observing that many consumers are suffering from new toy symptoms, but predicts that once all the hype and excitement surrounding Siri wears off, people will realize the impractically of such a system and revert to the easier solutions of sending text messages or checking the weather on the iPhone manually, and that once the initial hype blows over, Siri will soon be forgotten.

If William Shakespeare Wrote an Apple Rumor Blog

CIO's John Cox says let's face it: the state of iPhone and iPad rumors is parlous, petty and paltry, where bad writing and punditry drives out the good.

But perhaps one of the world's greatest playwrights can show us to way to rejuvenated, rousing, robust rumoring.

Is this an iPad III which I see before me, the bezel toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee!

I have thee not, and yet I see thee still. Art thou not, favorite vision, sensible to feeling as to sight? Or art thou but a tablet of the mind, a false creation, proceeding from the rumor-oppressed brain?

AMOLED Display Revenue to Surge 169% Y/Y in 2011 from Smart Phone Adoption

The year 2011 was pivotal for OLED (organic light-emitting diode) displays, particularly AMOLED (active matrix OLED) displays. With strong growth in smart phones, AMOLED shipments are estimated to have reached 90 million units in 2011, up 97% Y/Y, while revenue is expected to grow to $3.36 billion, up 169% Y/Y, according to the latest NPD DisplaySearch Quarterly Small/Medium Shipment and Forecast Report:
http://bit.ly/axJaPS

As it competes with TFT LCDs, AMOLED penetration into the small/medium (9and smaller) display market has been increasing. In 2010, AMOLEDs had a 6 percent share of small/medium active matrix flat panel displays (TFT LCD and AMOLED), and is expected to double its share to 12 percent in 2011.

OLED stands for "Organic Light Emitting Diode" a flat screen technology expected to eventually rival LCD and plasma. AMOLED stands for "Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode." Active Matrix is a method for controlling individual pixels. AMOLED displays reportedly provide higher refresh rates than their passive-matrix OLED counterparts and consume significantly less power.

A major advantage of OLED/AMOLED panels is that their pixels are self-illuminating, unlike traditional LCD screens which require backlighting. Consequently, OLED/AMOLED panels consume less power and facilitate longer battery life thinner form factors. They are also claimed to offer superior brightness, wider viewing angles, faster response time and higher contrast ratios, as well as being flexible - theoretically allowing "foldable" mobile phone and cameras, or even tablets and notebooks.

Downsides are that AMOLED displays may be difficult to view in direct sunlight compared to LCDs because of their reduced maximum brightness, although Samsung's Super AMOLED technology claims to address this issue by reducing the size of gaps between screen layers, and OLED/AMOLED, technology is still relatively expensive. However, Wikipedia notes that researchers at DuPont have developed optimized coating processes for a new solution-coated AMOLED display technology that is cost and performance competitive with existing commercial vapor deposition technology and commercially viable at large glass sizes.

The growth of AMOLED in the small/medium segment is dominated by smartphones. Revenues for the smart phone segment more than doubled in 2011, with increasing shipments and higher ASPs due to larger screen sizes and increased display performance.

NPD DisplaySearch Quarterly Small/Medium Shipment and Forecast Report:
http://bit.ly/axJaPS

The success of AMOLED can particularly be seen in larger smartphone displays. In the first three quarters of 2011, shipments of AMOLED displays 3.5 and larger for smartphones reached 59.7 million units, up three-fold from the same period in 2010.

"Samsung Mobile Displays has been a key driver of the growth of AMOLEDs, with the company accounting for 97.5% of all AMOLED shipments," notes Hiroshi Hayase, NPD DisplaySearch's Vice President of Small/Medium Display Research. "Looking to capitalize on the growing market demand, LG Display, AUO, and CMI also are planning to ship AMOLEDs for smart phones in 2012."

Samsung's Galaxy line of smartphones has been the leading adopter of AMOLED displays with high contrast and motion picture response time, while Apple's iPhone uses a high resolution TFT LCD with IPS technology. The competition between the iPhone and Galaxy has brought increased attention to the AMOLED displays, currently produced only by Samsung Mobile Display.

The NPD DisplaySearch Quarterly Small/Medium Shipment and Forecast Report ( http://bit.ly/axJaPS ) includes many other key findings:

(*) With the successful mass-production of AMOLEDs and a new Gen 5.5 fab running, Samsung Mobile Display is producing larger AMOLED displays for applications such as Samsungs Galaxy Note and Tab tablet PCs, as well as supplying outside customers.

(*) AMOLEDs are also penetrating new market segments such as Sonys PS-Vita portable game, which features a 5 AMOLED; LG Display is shipping AMOLEDs to LG Electronics for external mobile phone displays.

(*) In addition, LG Electronics announced plans to produce a 55 AMOLED TV in 2012.

The NPD DisplaySearch Quarterly Small/Medium Shipment and Forecast Report ( http://bit.ly/axJaPS ) covers the entire range of small/medium displays shipped worldwide and regionally. Backed by over 40 suppliers of data and our own team of industry analysts, this report analyzes historical shipments and projects forecasts that provide decision makers with the insights they need to support procurement and product plans.

New Advanced Features: The Quarterly Small/Medium Shipment and Forecast Report ( http://bit.ly/axJaPS ) now offers advanced features that allow users to track data by viewing angle and 3D capabilities.
