Apple Infiltrates The Enterprise: More Than 1/5 Of Global Info Workers Use Apple Products For Work
Forrester Research's Frank Gillett in a Blog post says if you've been noticing more and more Apple products in public spaces and workspaces over the last few years, it's not just Apple consciousness on your part. Gillett says that research data reveal that 21% of information workers are using one or more Apple products for work, with almost half of enterprises of 1000 employees or more issuing Macs to at least some employees and planning a 52% increase in the number of Macs they issue in 2012.
Gillett reporte that Forrester decided to quantify the presence of Apple products in the workplace by asking over 3,300 IT decision makers in their annual Forrsights surveys what they were buying and supporting, but that doesn't capture the growing phenomenon of consumerization, where the employees are using personally owned technology for work purposes, whether at home or at work. Indeed, he reports, that's exactly what some of the CTOs were doing - bringing their personal gear to work and figuring out what they could do to make it work, often with little or no formal IT support.
Consequently, Gillett says Forrenter also asked 10,000 information workers what products they use to get work done, at work and at home, and has posted in his blog two portions of graphics from the firm's "Apple Infiltrates The Enterprise report".
Takeaway Highlights:
Managers and execs are more than twice as likely to use Apple products.
Younger info workers are twice as likely to use Apple products as older ones.
Higher income workers are more likely to use Apple products about that latter point, Gillett says use of Apple products is actually pretty strong right down the income scale, with most of the sample of 10,000 global info workers earning less than $50k, and an adoption rate of Apple products of almost 17% even in the bottom quartile of workers who make less than $12k per year.
Info workers in countries outside North America and Europe are more likely to use Apple products for work.

Android Captures Record 39 Percent Share of Global Tablet Shipments in Q4 2011 But Apple iOS Still Way Out In Front At 58 Percent
According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global tablet shipments reached 27 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011. Android jumped to a record 39 percent global share, while Apple iOS maintained its strong leadership at 58 percent.
Peter King, Director at Strategy Analytics, says, "Global tablet shipments reached an all-time high of 26.8 million units in Q4 2011, surging 150 percent from 10.7 million in Q4 2010. Demand for tablets among consumer, business and education users remains strong. Apple shipped a robust 15.4 million iPads worldwide and maintained its strong market leadership with 58 percent share during the fourth quarter of 2011. Apple shrugged off the much-hyped threat from entry-level Android models this quarter."
Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, adds, "Android captured a record 39 percent share of global tablet shipments in Q4 2011, rising from 29 percent a year earlier. Global Android tablet shipments tripled annually to 10.5 million units. Dozens of Android models distributed across multiple countries by numerous brands such as Amazon, Samsung, Asus and others have been driving volumes. Android is so far proving relatively popular with tablet manufacturers despite nagging concerns about fragmentation of Android's operating system, user-interface and app store ecosystem."
Other findings from the research include:
Global tablet shipments hit 66.9 million units in full-year 2011, surging 260 percent from 18.6 million in full-year 2010. Consumers are increasingly buying tablets in preference to netbooks and even entry-level notebooks or desktops;
Microsoft captured a niche 1 percent global tablet share in Q4 2011. The upcoming release of Windows 8 this year cannot come quickly enough for Microsoft, so its hardware partners can start competing more effectively in the tablet space.

The PC Is Dying. The iPad And Mac Are Not
Computerworld's Jonny Evans says the PC is dying, with Apple continuing to dominate the tablet market, Amazon's Kindle Fire picking up converts at the low end -- squeezing other players out of the game, and Apple's Mac sales propping up the entire PC industry.
Evans cites new Strategy Analytics figures (see report above in today's Applelinks iOS News Reader) revealing global tablet shipments climbing 150 percent with Apple capturing 58 percent of 27 million unit sales in Q4, while Android devices took 39 percent.
Evans contends that If you deconstruct the market share figures it's ev ident that Windows-based PC sales are on the skids. "No one wants a PC anymore," he allows, "people want a Mac, an iPad, or an iPhone.... The PC is dying.... The old model is simply fading away. Where Apple steps today, everyone else will follow. What do you think Windows 8 is an attempt to emulate?"
More evidence: recent Gartner and IDC numbers showing that Apple's Mac sales grew 20.7 percent while the PC industry as a whole shrank 5.9 percent. Apple is selling one Mac for every seven PCs sold worldwide, and with Apple fixing to unleash new MacBook Air configurations pretty soon, that trend seems liable to continue.

PaperPort Notes new dictation capabilities are powered by Nuance's proven Dragon voice recognition via the cloud-based Dragon Mobile software developers kit (SDK), which is behind a growing number of voice-enabled mobile and consumer apps.

"Voice has become the preferred way to interact with devices and services for a simple reason it is faster and better than any other option," says Robert Weideman, senior vice president and general manager of the Nuance Document Imaging Division. "The proof is in the app.; PaperPort Notes with Dragon voice input is simply a better way to create, use and share your notes."
Key Features of PaperPort Notes
Quickly create typed, handwritten and dictated notes;
Annotate and highlight documents and notes, and add sticky notes;
Add page-specific audio comments within notes;
Combine documents or specific pages from documents stored in cloud-based document sharing services such as Google Docs, Box.net, DropBox, Evernote and PaperPort Anywhere

Search and navigate quickly through notes;

Garmin International Inc. will showcase its newest iOS app innovations at Macworld/iWorld 2012 in San Francisco (Jan 26-28, booth #836). Garmin offers a wide range of location-based apps for iOS users spanning aviation, fitness, tracking, treasure hunting and turn-by-turn navigation. Among the newest features, Garmin will demo social search and check-in capabilities for the StreetPilot onDemand navigation app as well as a new function for the Tracker!" app that allows users to share links to a live tracking map.

"We embrace apps in all of our business segments to support the increasingly mobile lifestyles of our customers and to complement our hardware offerings," says Dan Bartel, Garmin's vice president of worldwide sales. "At this year's Macworld/iWorld, we will showcase our growing portfolio of iOS apps, including new features that help our users to stay connected and share location-based information with their friends and families.:
Check in with your navigation app: Among other new features, Garmin will demo social media capabilities for the StreetPilot onDemand app that integrate Wikipedia, Facebook and foursquare. Users can easily display locations from these networks on the map and check in upon arrival at their destination. Clicking on one of the Wikipedia icons on the map will reveal detailed information about a location, such as the identity of an interesting building or landmark. Also new for the StreetPilot onDemand app are some fun features that make driving more enjoyable, such as a variety of voices or vehicle icons to choose from as well as visually refined 3D renderings of buildings to provide a better overview. The latest versions of the StreetPilot Onboard and the NAVIGON turn-by-turn navigation apps will also be on display. Garmin acquired the German navigation provider NAVIGON in 2011.
Track what s important: The Garmin Tracker app tracks what s important. The app works in conjunction with the GTU 10 tracking device to display its location on a map, making it easy to virtually follow anything, from your loved-ones to valuables or the family dog. Users can set up a geo-fence to get alerts when the device crosses in or out of a defined area. The latest version of this app now also allows a continuous tracking mode, and enables users to send out map links to others, so they can follow the location of a device too1.
Get fit with your iPhone: The Garmin Fit app turns the iPhone into a powerful training tool. The app keeps track of current walking, running or cycling stats. Users can easily upload, review and share their activities on Garmin Connect!", a vibrant online community of fitness enthusiasts. With an optional ANT+ iPhone adapter, users can also pair this app with Garmin fitness sensors like a heart rate monitor, foot pod or speed/cadence sensor.
Go on a digital treasure hunt: The free OpenCaching app provides a fun way for families, nature lovers, hikers, or scouts to go outside on a digital treasure hunt. Geocaching, a popular activity worldwide, takes digital technology away from the couch and out on the trail. Hidden treasure troves - known as caches - have been hidden around the world. Their coordinates have been uploaded to online communities, such as the free website Opencaching.com, along with details and clues. Garmin s app allows users to participate in this treasure hunting game by hiding, finding, logging and sharing cache information right from the iPhone.

Garmin Pilot My-Cast! is an aviation-centric weather and flight planning application designed specifically for general aviation, corporate and commercial pilots.
