Worldwide Tablet Shipments to Reach 145 Million in 2013 as Affordable Options and Windows Take Hold, Says ABI Research
Whether for entertainment, convenience, or enhancing productivity, media tablets continue to take the market by storm. According to market intelligence firm ABI Research, an estimated 145 million tablet devices will ship worldwide in 2013. A combination of new market entrants, more affordable choices for consumers, and increased adoption by business audiences will support the growth.
"The rate of innovation is slowing as tablet vendors augment their product portfolios to meet the needs of market audiences," says senior practice director Jeff Orr. The late 2012 launches of Apple's iPad mini and a variety of slates based on Intel architecture and new Windows operating systems will only begin to show their progress this year. Most of the attention for tablets is coming from North America where the outlook for 2013 has the region consuming just over 50% of worldwide shipments.
Business interest in tablets is expected to grow to 19% of all shipments in 2013 as more PC OEMs unveil product solutions designed for the workplace. While some cannibalization of the PC installed base is likely, the majority of new tablet opportunity comes from workers that have, until now, worked without the benefits of computing technologies.
Recent media reports cited the uptake of tablets as the sole cause for the demise of the eBook Reader, though ABI Researchs 10+ year study of the eReader market reiterates that tablets have little to do with the trajectory of dedicated digital readers. The facts are that the U.S. market continues to dominate eReader shipments and an aging Baby Boomer population looking to replicate the print reading experience is a waning audience, adds Orr. If other world regions do not successfully organize digital publishing markets, the dedicated eReader market will go away without regard for adoption of tablets and other mobile devices.
These findings are part of ABI Research's Media Tablets and eReaders (http://www.abiresearch.com/research/service/media-tablets/) Research Service.

No Phablets From Apple, says Apple CEO Tim Cook
Quartz's Christopher Mims notes that phablets, the large-screen smartphones that are shaping up to be the breakout mobile product of 2013, are a conspicuously void Apple's product lineup, and when asked by an analyst from Goldman Sachs during Apple's fiscal Q1/13 financials conference call this week whether Apple had plans to make one, Cook tap-danced around the question, replying that the iPhone 5's new four-inch Retina display provides a larger screen size without sacrificing the one-handed ease of use as a handset, and giving the the impression that Cook wuld rather convince us that this whole expanding iPhone thing has gone quite far enough.
Phablets aren't going away, though, and one hopes Apple has a plan B for a large-screen iPhone in the works, as has been rumored.
Mims observes that iPad Mini, with its 7.85-inch screen size, would be the makings of a phablet with a telephony chip installed.

Unlocking Cellphones Becomes Illegal Saturday
TechNewsDaily's Michael Gowan reprts that the clock to unlock a new mobile phone is running downs, noting that in October 2012, the Librarian of Congress, who determines exemptions to a strict anti-hacking law called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), decided unlocking mobile phones would no longer be allowed, but provided a 90-day window during which people could still buy a phone and unlock it. That window closes on January 26.

Go Ahead, Dunk it or Drop it: Seidios OBEX for iPhone 5, a Waterproof and Impact-Proof Case, Begins Shipping Worldwide
Seidio, a manufacturer of premium mobile technology accessories, begins shipping the OBEX case for iPhone 5. Using advanced technology and durable materials, the OBEX, (Latin for barrier) offers unbeatable, extreme protection against everyday drops, liquids, and dust. The OBEX for iPhone will be on display at Booth #847 at the Macworld/iWorld Show in San Francisco, Calif., January 31st-February 2nd.
"We're excited for our consumers to check out the OBEX, and test its durability," says David Chang, CEO of Seidio. "Dunk it in water or drop it! Were confident you will have complete peace of mind with our case as it stands up to even the toughest environments because of its advanced technology and specially designed materials."

The OBEX protects against water, snow, mud and other liquids. This impressive case passed the IP68 rating which means it is both dust-tight and protected against total submersion in water. The two-stage protection system ensures all critical points of entry are sealed tight and safe. However, the specially designed case and top-quality materials guarantee protection does not obstruct functionality. Anti-reflection glass causes no interference with the camera lens, and the acrylic glass screen protector sits flush with the screen so it does not leave behind any watermark effects and retains the screens clarity.
Seidio ran the OBEX through some serious drop tests, too. It has passed the U.S. Military Standards test, MIL-STD-810G, which evaluates the case from 4-feet drops from a variety of angles. This is due to the unique combination of Polycarbonate and Thermoplastic Polyurethane materials. Additionally, the screen protector is stamped with a 4H hardness rating to protect the devices glass from external elements.
The case will not impede radio signals or Bluetooth. Rubber stoppers are used in the important ports, and can be easily removed for access. A patent pending design case with custom padding and grids allow sound to travel through without distortion. Additionally, the OBEX will also be available as a case and locking holster combo.
The OBEX retails for $79.95, and the OBEX Combo retails for $89.95. For more information, check out:

Seidio Develops Revolutionary Tempered Glass Screen Protector, VITREO, for iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III
Seidio, rolls out the groundbreaking VITREO tempered glass screen protector for the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III. Unlike those flimsy, plastic screen protectors flooding the accessory market, the VITREO boasts unbeatable, shatterproof protection with tapered edges for an appealing look and durability.
"Consumers have plenty of protection options for their smartphone device; but, we [Seidio] wanted to offer a product that looks and feels like the actual smartphone screen," says David Chang, CEO of Seidio. "When installed, there are no gaps or bubbles between the VITREO and screen so it wont interfere with touch sensitivity. Its elegant, sleek and the ultimate choice for screen protection."

World-class engineers carefully designed the VITREO with specially processed glass stamped with a 9H hardness rating. The Register's Anna Leach reports that the Pope has urged Catholics to use Twitter as a "portal of truth" and a way of converting non-believers to Catholicism.
In a letter published Thursday, "Social Networks: portals of truth and faith; new spaces for evangelization" the Pope, a new Twitter convert, warmly endorses the Web 2.0.
"Unless the Good News is made known also in the digital world," explained the representative of God on Earth, "it may be absent in the experience of many people for whom this existential space is important."

Digital Book Publisher Begins John Ed Mathison Ministry iPad Project
Dallas digital book publisher Claxton Creative, LLC, led by former the former press secretary of two former Alabama governors, Thursday announced it has begun producing digital book formats of Montgomery's John Ed Mathison's recently published print work, When God Redefines The Possible.
Mathison's book, which is 109-pages in print, contains more than 50 chapters of colorful and important ministry lessons and encourages readers to see that God is still doing miracles, even in today's turbulent times.
The digital format for iPad will include a series of videos, interactive photos and illustrations, end of chapter quizzes, puzzles, Internet social media components and other ways to help broaden the reach of one of the Southeast's most recognized United Methodist Church leaders.
Versions also will be produced for readers using Amazon's Kindle, Barnes and Noble's Nook, as well as the Samsung Galaxy and Microsoft Surface.
"John Ed Mathison has been a recognized leader in ministry for nearly a half century and even today, he is on the cutting edge of using technology to help spread the word of God," says Donald Claxton, owner of Claxton Creative in Dallas. "The use of digital books will make his work available to anyone in the world with a computer, tablet or smartphone. Now that's really an example of God redefining possible."
John Ed, who served 36 years as Senior Minister of Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church in Montgomery, said he is excited to begin this new phase of his ministry.
"I have said before that 'it is easy to have a Gutenberg mentality when we live in a Google reality.' and taking this next step, to convert my writings and teachings into a digital format so that people around the world can share and interact with each other through the social media tools and interactivity functions within the book is an example of where ministry must grow in order to reach those needing and yearning to hear the word of God," Mathison says. "I'm excited for the potentials this brings for ministry. God really is redefining the possible."
Claxton said his firm, based in Dallas, is working to schedule a video production schedule with Mathison and to begin the digital design process for the book. Release of the book is slated for March 2013.
Claxton is the former assistant press secretary to the late Alabama Gov. Guy Hunt and former press secretary for Gov. Fob James. He moved from Montgomery in 2001 to become the communications director for the Dallas Independent School District, then the 12th largest school district in the nation. In 2012, his company began producing books for the iPad, including Dr. Mark Van Stone's interactive text 2012: Science & Prophecy of the Ancient Maya and There's A Zombie In My Treehouse by Ken Plume, John Robinson and Len Peralta of Atlanta.
The John Ed Mathison Leadership Ministries was formed in 2008, as John Ed reached the mandatory retirement age of the United Methodist Church. The ministry is a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability. The mission of the ministry is to bring honor and glory to the Kingdom of God by training leaders for Kingdom work. John Ed actively speaks to churches, conferences and leadership training programs on a local, national and global scale. More information is available at their website.
