Why Apple Needs An iPad Pro

In their Monday Note column this week, Frédric Filloux - Paris based general manager for digital operations at Les Echos Groupe, and former senior Apple executive and founder of Be Inc. Jean Louis Gasseé state the case for an iPad Pro capable of running a real, desktop operating system.

They note that the new 128 GB iPad released this week is becoming popularly known as the "iPad Pro," with Apple all but claiming as much in its press release, which says in part that "Companies regularly utilizing large amounts of data such as 3D CAD files, X-rays, film edits, music tracks, project blueprints, training videos and service manuals all benefit from having a greater choice of storage options for iPad." However, critics are noting that 128 GB is more storage than any sane person could ever want in a pure tablet.

Nevertheless, Filloux and Gasseé think an iPad Pro does represent the future, with the iPad and tablets in general, but in the meantime when they take a closer look at the iPad as a Pro platform, they see that Apple's tablet is is a long way yet from realizing its professional potential, although the critics have it wrong about increased storage, which is a necessary element, but nowhere near sufficient.

Filloux and Gasseé observe that when one attempts to do real work on an iPad, things quickly get complicated, and simply throwing storage at the problem is, clearly, not enough to make the iPad a Pro device.

Why PCMag Thinks Microsoft Surface Pro Is One Of The Most Exciting PCs Seen In Years

PCMag's Dan Costa says a reviewer's operative conundrum with the Microsoft Surface Pro is whether to compare it to Apple's iPad or a Core i5-equipped Windows 8 ultrabook. The answer, of course, is both, he says, but that makes assigning ratings and handing out awards pretty tricky. However, he notes that although it's neither fish nor fowl, and some of both, after weeks of testing the Surface Pro in the PCMag Labs, their lead PC analyst, Joel Santo Domingo has decided that whatever it is, it is a great product - despite garnering some negative early reviews.

Costa notes that the Surface Pro has a real PC Core i5 processor, is available with 64GB or 128GB of storage and isn't isn't a "pseudo laptop," but is a laptop replacement, and while critics complain it's a strange hybrid that straddles the line between tablets and laptops, that's exactly the point behind it, wifth Microsoft betting that the Surface Pro, or products like it, could replace your tablet, your notebook, and maybe even your home computer, and that while Microsoft still has work to do, this is one of the most exciting PCs he's seen in years.

But Microsoft Can't Sell Windows 8 Tablets Even In The Middle Of A Tablet Frenzy

The Register's Paul Kunert reports that Microsoft can't tap into the booming tablet market, according to new figures that reveal lacklustre sales of Surface RT and other Windows 8 tablets, citing Canalys figures for Q4 showing a 12 percent growth in the worldwide PC market, fuelled by a 75 percent rise in tablet shipments to 46.2 million units, while notebook sales were flat (58 million), and desktops declined 5 per cent (28 million).

Yet Microsoft has only been able to move 1.6 million Windows-based tablets were bought by customers - including 722,000 Surface RT devices, representing just a 3.4 percent share of the overall tablet market. (Apple still enjoys nearly 50 percent).

iPhone Users Break Their Screens And Are Lazy

The inquirer's Dave Neal reports that Mobileinsurance.co.uk says it has noticed a rise in the number of claims on broken screens and wanted to know the state of the market, finding that an astonishing quarter of iPhone users surveyed are using iPhones with broken or cracked screens just because they "hadn't got round" to getting their phone fixed, and that a third probably couldn't be bothered to fix it anyway.

Belkin FastFit Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard Case For iPad mini

Belkin has announced what it claims is the thinnest and lightest Bluetooth wireless keyboard currently available for the iPad mini, the FastFit Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard Case. The case combines a superior typing experience, easy portability and convenient power capabilities to enable iPad mini users to make the most out of their tablets.

image

At just 7 mm thick, the FastFit keyboard cover is thinner than the iPad mini itself. The keyboard also features Belkin's TruType keyboard, which provides well-spaced keys for fast and accurate typing. Each key has a spring mechanism that provides tactile feedback when struck, enabling fast, intuitive, and comfortable typing.

"Though the FastFit provides a laptop-like typing experience, its a far cry from a bulky laptop computer," says Jamie Elgie, senior director of product management at Belkin. "Built with anodized aircraft-grade aluminum, the case is ideal for travel or typing on the go. Secure-hold magnets snap the keyboard onto the iPad mini for easy carrying without the added weight."

image

The case's low-powered Bluetooth 3.0 connection and 200mAh battery ensure comfortable wireless typing with optimal battery life. The FastFit can last for 155 hours of active use without needing a charge.

In addition, FastFit's auto-wake feature enables iPad mini when the cover is opened, and turns it to sleep when the cover is closed.

Android Powered A Third Of All Mobile Phones Shipped In Q4 2012 - Canalys

Canalys has published its final mobile phone shipment estimates across the 50+ countries that it tracks. The total mobile phone market, at 438.1 million units, was flat year-on-year, while the worldwide smartphone market grew 37%. Android smartphones accounted for 34% of all phone shipments and iOS phones 11%. Smartphones now represent almost 50% of all the phones that shipped in Q4 2012.

In the smartphone market, Android handsets accounted for 69% of the 216.5 million shipped. Samsung had a very strong quarter, growing 78%, while the Chinese vendors Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo and Yulong all grew by triple-digit percentages. Android's share did, however, dip sequentially from 74% as Apple's share grew from 15% to 22% on the strength of the iPhone 5. BlackBerry and Windows Phone shares remained unchanged sequentially at 4% and 2% respectively.

"BlackBerry, Microsoft and Nokia, as well as other Android vendors, have strategies and devices in place to attack, but the task is daunting to say the least," says Pete Cunningham, Principal Analyst. "When we look at the whole of 2012, Nokia remained the number three smartphone vendor, shipping 35 million units, but Apple in second place shipped 101 million more handsets.. First-placed Samsung shipped 74 million more than Apple - the gaps are colossal. But there is still a big opportunity as smart phone penetration increases around the world. Vendors left in the wake of the top vendors must at the very least improve their portfolios, time-to-market and marketing, as well as communicate their differentiators. Microsoft, BlackBerry and other new OS entrants, such as Mozilla, must make the OS switch as simple as possible and drive and localize their respective app and content ecosystems."

Huawei took third place for the first time in Q4 and ZTE fourth. As well as their home markets, they have been relatively successful in the US, where ZTE was fourth and Huawei fifth, driven by their portfolios of low-cost LTE smart phones. Even so, both vendors took less than 5% share each there.

Sony fell out of the top five this quarter, and Lenovo moved in. It was one of the fastest-growing smartphone vendors, growing 216% year-on-year and shifting 9.5 million units to take fifth place. "China made up 98% of Lenovo's shipments with a handful of emerging markets making up the rest. Its struggle to gain a foothold in markets outside of China means that it may be forced down the acquisition route - as it was with its PC business - hence the speculation about BlackBerry," says Jessica Kwee, Analyst.

In the largest phone market in the world, China, smartphones dominated shipments, making up 73% of the market compared to 40% a year ago. Volumes of smart phones in China grew 113% to 64.7 million units, with Samsung taking the top spot followed by Lenovo and Yulong. Huawei leapfrogged ZTE by over a million units to take fourth place. "China is a massive growth prospect, but Apple is not making the market share impact there that it is in other markets. The lack of a device on the China Mobile network is a big drawback, combined with high price points. Addressing these issues with the combination of a TD-SCDMA device and a cheaper model would open the flood-gates," says Nicole Peng, China Research Director.
