IDC Tempers Long-Term Tablet Forecast as Competing Technologies Heat Up

Faced with growing competition from larger smartphones and the prospect of new categories such as wearable devices diverting consumer spending, International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker has modestly lowered its tablet forecast for 2013 and beyond. The company now expects worldwide tablet shipments to reach 227.4 million units in 2013, down from a previous forecast of 229.3 million but still 57.7% above 2012 shipments. Despite the slight reduction for this year, the market will continue to grow at a rapid pace and by 2017 IDC expects worldwide shipments to be nearly 407 million units. The company also adjusted its regional outlook, with maturing markets such as the U.S. now expected to cede share more rapidly to emerging markets such as Asia/Pacific.

"A lower than anticipated second quarter, hampered by a lack of major product announcements, means the second half of the year now becomes even more critical for a tablet market that has traditionally seen its highest shipment volume occur during the holiday season," says Tom Mainelli, Research Director, Tablets. "We expect average selling prices to continue to compress as more mainstream vendors utilize low-cost components to better compete with the whitebox tablet vendors that continue to enjoy widespread traction in the market despite typically offering lower-quality products and poorer customer experiences."

While mature markets such as North America and Western Europe have driven much of the tablet market's growth to date, IDC expects shipment growth to begin to slow in these markets. Market saturation, increased adoption of smartphones with 5-inch and greater screens, and the eventual growth of the wearable category will impact tablet growth in all regions, but are likely to impact mature regions first. As a result, IDC now expects the mature market (comprised of North America, Western Europe, and Japan) to shrink from 60.8% of the worldwide market in 2012 to 49% by 2017. As a result, emerging markets (comprised broadly of Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan), Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa) will grow from 39.2% in 2012 to 51% in 2017.

"Year-on-year growth is beginning to slow as the tablet market approaches early stages of maturity," says Jitesh Ubrani, Research Analyst for the Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker. "Much of the long-term growth will be driven by countries like China where projected growth rates will be consistently higher than the worldwide average."

A secondary trend in the tablet market is the rise of tablets in the commercial segment. Education projects and adoption in vertical markets such as retail are contributing factors as this segment is set to slowly double from the 10% share it held in 2012 to 20% by 2017.

Musing About Dumping The iPhone And Replacing It With A What?

PC Mag's Seamus Condron says his iPhone 5 May Be Hos Last Mobile Phone. He affrims being a tried-and-true Apple customer, but says the iPhone 5 ($689.00 at Amazon) is the first Apple product he's owned that doesn't excite him to use, and that using it every day feels completely perfunctory, and his relationship with the handset is becoming strained. He's thinking about sellingit even though he's still at the front end of a two-year contract with his carrier. However, Condron says if he does sell, his replacement probably won't be a "phone" in the typical sense.

Howcum? Because for one thing, his monthly talk time never exceeds double digits. On the other hand, he consistently exceeds is 5GB plan due to compulsive emailing, tweeting, Flipboarding, and use of other data-intensive apps.

The tentative solution? Condron says he is seriously considering experimenting with an iPad mini (269.50 at Extak) as his primary mobile device.

He notes that while the cellular version of the iPad mini might make a more logical iPhone replacement, he's at least going to test out living with a Wi-Fi only connection, noting that we cling to certain technologies despite the fact that more logical alternatives are emerging. He notes that cable subscriptions are becoming increasingly redundant, and thinks that in the next few years, the idea of a cell phone plan will likewise seem unnecessary.

9To5Mac Reviews DeskConnect; Indie Developer Beats Apple to AirDrop-Like File Sharing Between iOS And Mac

9To5MAc reports that DeskConnect is an pair of apps for iOS and Mac that avoids all of the unpleasantness of connecting the two devices and allows you to seamlessly send files from one to the other.

DeskConnect for Mac sits in your menu bar and waits for you to drop files onto it. Once youve dropped a file, it is immediately transferred to your iPhone or iPad. You don't have to start the app on your iOS device at all.

The DeskConnect app on iOS supports sending photos and websites from Safari (or Chrome), and plain text from your devices clipboard. Sending any other kind of file will require proper sharing support in whatever app you use to handle those files (for example, to share a Pages document, you have to use Pages for iOS to send the file to DeskConnect).

However, the reviewers say DeskConnect struggles with a few key points, such as batch file sharing from mobile devices and reliability problems, noting that DeskConnect is available now on the Mac App Store for and the iOS App Store. Both apps and the account required to use them are free.
