Apple Ranks Highest In Owner Satisfaction for Second Consecutive J.D. Power And Associates Tablet Satisfaction Study

As more households continue to adopt tablet computers, the act of sharing these devices among household members is having substantial influence on the purchase-decision process and on future brand selection, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2013 U.S. Tablet Satisfaction StudySM - Volume 1 released on Thursday.

Now in its second year, the study measures tablet owner satisfaction among those who have owned their tablet for one year or less. Satisfaction is measured across five key factors (in order of importance): performance (26%); ease of operation (22%); styling and design (19%); features (17%); and cost (16%).

And for the second consecutive study, Apple ranks highest among manufacturers of tablets in overall owner satisfaction, achieving a score of 836 and performing well in four factors: performance; ease of operation; styling and design; and features. Amazon (829) closely follows Apple in the rankings and performs particularly well in the cost factor.

Key Findings of the study include:

• Tablet owners who also have a smartphone spend 36 percent more time browsing the Internet on their tablet than on their smartphone.

• Twenty-seven percent of tablet owners say they are likely to buy a new tablet within the next 12 months, compared with 37 percent in 2012.

• Ninety-four percent of highly satisfied tablet owners are likely to purchase additional consumer electronic devices from the same manufacturer.

The study finds that 51 percent of tablet owners share their device with at least one other person. While the incidence differs across brands, tablet manufacturers may benefit from promoting shared usage as a selling point, as satisfaction increases when more people use one tablet device. When a tablet is only used by one person, overall satisfaction is 824 (on a 1,000-point scale), 28 points lower than when a tablet is shared by four or more persons (852).

"It is somewhat unexpected to find that although 64 percent of tablet owners were the sole decision-maker involved in their device purchase, many of them share their tablet with someone else," says Kirk Parsons, senior director of telecommunications services at J.D. Power and Associates. "It is important that manufacturers understand this dynamic and try to provide an exceptional experience for all users since this may improve future business prospects, as high satisfaction through sharing a tablet device may result in owners handing down their tablet to a family member or friend, and the likelihood of repurchasing a new tablet from the same brand and running the same operating system increases."

In fact, 41 percent of tablet owners who share their device among four or more persons indicate they "definitely will" repurchase their next tablet from their current tablet manufacturer, compared with 28 percent among those who do not share their device with any other person. This shared usage is not limited to adults. Nearly one-half (46%) of tablet owners have children who also use their tablet. Among owners who indicate they share their device with children, 30 percent have downloaded education apps, compared with 16 percent among those who do not share their device with children.

Tablets are also being used for business activities, with 20 percent of owners indicating they use their tablet for this purpose. Owners of tablets that originally evolved from e-readers are not as likely to use their device to engage in business activity. While tablet owners are beginning to engage in business activities with their device, just 31 percent of employers contribute to the price or reimburse their employees for the entire tablet purchase price, a 3-percentage-point decrease from 2012. This may be an indication that some companies may be promoting a "bring your own device" (BYOD) strategy.

The 2013 U.S. Tablet Satisfaction Study--Volume 1 findings are based on experiences evaluated by 1,857 tablet owners. The study was fielded in February 2013.

Apple Maintains 48 Percent Share of Global Branded Tablet Shipments in Q1 2013 - Strategy Analytics

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global tablet shipments reached 40.6 million units in the first quarter of 2013. Android secured a robust 43 percent global share, while Apple iOS maintained its strong leadership at 48 percent. Windows secured a 7.5 percent global share.

Peter King , Director of Tablets at Strategy Analytics, comments: "Global branded tablet shipments reached an all-time high of 40.6 million units in Q1 2013, surging 117 percent from 18.7 million in Q1 2012. Demand for tablets among consumer, business and education users remains strong. Apple produced a solid performance this quarter as the Mini had its first full term and shipped a robust 19.5 million mixed iPads worldwide maintaining market leadership with 48 percent share during the first quarter of 2013. Android captured a record 43 percent share of global branded tablet shipments in Q1 2013, rising from 34 percent a year earlier. Global Android tablet shipments increase 177 percent annually to 17.6 million units."

King adds, "When we add White-Box1 tablets into the mix, Android market share of the total tablet market increases significantly to 52% and iOS slips to 41%, as the bulk of the White-Box tablets are Android low budget models aimed at a different market to the branded tablets."

Other findings from the research include:

• Global branded tablet shipments grew 117 percent annually in Q1 2013, compared with 146 percent annually in Q1 2012. This was the highest CY Q1 shipment figure since the modern tablet industry began in Q2 2010;

• Microsoft captured a niche 7.5 percent global tablet share in Q1 2013. Very limited distribution, a shortage of top tier apps, and confusion in the market, are all holding back shipments.

Notes:

1 A white-box tablet is a product produced by one company (the manufacturer or ODM) that other companies (the vendors or OEMs) rebrand to make it appear as if they made it. White box tablets invariably use different components to branded tablet in order to keep costs to a minimum.

2 Shipments refer to sell-in. Numbers are rounded. The definition of tablet does not include e-book readers or convertible PCs.

Android Continues to Climb, But Millennials Lean To Apple

Forbes' Pam Goodfellow notes that among consumers planning to purchase a mobile phone in 2013's secind quarter (April, May, June), more than half (54.6%) are considering an Android device, while fewer (41.5%) are shortlisting an Apple iPhone, and that disparity between the two brands has grown from 4% in April 2012 to a current 32% gap bully for Android.

However, Ms. Goodfellow notes that among Millennials - individuals born between 1983 and 1995 - nearly seven out of ten (67.6%) are leaning toward the iPhone 5, while their enthusiasm for Samsung's Galaxy S4 is somewhat cooler (61.9%). The devices are more evenly matched among Gen X-ers (1965 to 1982) and the Silent generation (pre-1946), while Boomers (1946 to 1964) look like they're leading the charge for the Galaxy S4. She notes that these results are a bit of a reversal from last year's Android/iOS match-up where the Android operating system pulled preference among the younger generations, and observes that with Apple enjoying the favor os Millennials currently, it seems that some of these warm wishes may pay off in the near term.

Tablets Outselling Desktops And Notebooks Combined In U.K.

The Register reports that tablet computerss have been outselling desktop and notebook PCs combined in the U.K., and they could well be about to generate more revenue for their manufacturers too, according to data from GfK, a market research firm.

Tablets have accounted for more than half of the sales volume of computer products in the UK since October 2012, GfKs monthly stats show, rising to almost three-quarters in the run-up to Christmas but then falling back to just under 60 per cent during the first three months of 2013.

However, notebooks still generate more sales value than tablets save for November and December 2012 as notable exceptions.
