"Why iPhone?" Elucidated

No doubt feeling hot Galaxy S 4 breath on its neck, Apple has posted a detailed argument in support of the iPhone 5 entitled "Why iPhone?"

Apple notes that in eight straight studies by J.D. Power and Associates - every study since the first iPhone was introduced iPhone has ranked Highest in Customer Satisfaction with Consumer Smartphones, highest in the study, which reviewed the following categories: performance, physical design, features, and ease of operation.

It also extolls the iPhone's engineering and design, noting that every detail and every material - particularly the sleek aluminum enclosure - has been meticulously considered and refined. "And it's made with a level of precision you'd expect from a finely crafted watch, not a smartphone. As a result, iPhone feels substantial in your hand and perfect in your pocket."

A Google OS Would Struggle To Compete With Windows For 1-2 Years, Say Taiwan Notebook ODMs And Vendors

Digitimes' Monica Chen and Joseph Tsai report that while Google is likely to integrate Chrome OS with Android, such a Google OS would struggle to compete with Windows in the global notebook market at least for one to two years, according to Taiwan-based notebook ODMs and vendors.

Chen and Tsai note that compatibility and consumer usage habits are the major obstacles that the Chrome OS would need to break through to attract demand, observing that while both Google and Acer have claimed that Chromebooks are seeing better-than-expected acceptance, total sales of less than 500,000 units show that the devices still need a lot improvement, according to their sources.

Touch Screens And Greasy Hands: All You Need Is Glove

The Register's Alastair Dabbs says he's surrounded by shiny glass and plastic rectangles between the hours of 6pm and 6am - a mix of iOS and Android tablets: two 10-inch, one 8-inch and a 7-inch and his smartphone. All shiny greasy rectangles. "Are my hands really that greasy?" Dabbs asks. "They must be, judging by the state of these iPad and Kindle Fire screens after ten minutes in my mitts."

Dabbs says last November, HLW bought him a pair of woolly gloves with capacitive fingertips so that he could operate my phone outdoors in the cold. Contrary to his expectations, they work so well he's considered wearing them in the office, but doesn't because he cant stand having to explain why he's wearing gloves indoors to everyone who walks past his desk. So in addition to all the shiny rectangles, Dabbs's overnight desk is adorned with two large lens cloths and a bottle of screen-cleaner spray, but laments that the viscosity of his finger-grease is such that the cloths are not that much use: and that what he probably needs is an ice scraper.

He's been experimenting with a variety of capacitive pens and some capacitive styli, and has provisionally settled on Wacom's pricey Bamboo Stylus Duo, with the screen cleaner now only required once a day, but says a capacitive stylus is really "a nonsense tool," since the whole point of capacitive touchscreens is to support multiple simultaneous touches, enabling such actions as rotate, pinch and zoom, while with a stylus you regress to point-and-click.

Samsung Announces the Availability of Exynos 5 Octa for New Generation of Mobile Devices

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has announced that its new Exynos 5 Octa application processor is scheduled for mass-production in the second quarter of 2013. The Exynos 5 Octa features an unprecedented eight-core ARM big.LITTLE architecture based on the Cortex-A15 CPU, technology built for efficient handling of multitasking abilities for high-end mobile devices today. The Android operating system, unlike Apple's iOS, supports multitasking.

"High processing performance based on multi-cores has become an essential factor for advanced mobile devices, and what users expect more is how long and seamlessly they can enjoy smart mobile computing experiences," says Taehoon Kim, vice president of marketing, System LSI Business, Device Solutions Division, Samsung Electronics. "With the new mobile platform driven by the Exynos 5 Octa processor, which heralds and fulfills such expectations, consumers will be able to experience a new level of mobile computing in a few months."

As highlighted at CES 2013, the Exynos 5 Octa is the worlds first mobile application processor to implement the new concept of processing architecture, big.LITTLE, based on the Cortex-A15 CPU to offer optimal core use. By housing a total of eight cores to draw from four powerful Cortex-A15 cores for processing-intense tasks along with Cortex-A7 quad cores for lighter workloadsthe Exynos 5 Octa enables mobile devices to achieve maximum performance. This approach offers up to 70 percent energy saving when performing various tasks, compared to using Cortex-A15cores only.

The newest Exynos processor will be manufactured using Samsungs latest 28-nanometer (nm) HKMG (High-k Metal Gate) low power process and power-saving design, which increases the power efficiency of the processor by minimizing the static current leakage.

The Samsung Exynos 5 Octa enhances the powerful 3D graphics processing capabilities by more than two-times over the Exynos 4 Quad.

With todays advanced display technology transitioning toward ever higher and sharper resolutions, the Exynos 5 Octa is powerful enough to drive WQXGA (2560x1600) display, the best crystal-clear resolution currently available for mobile devices, enabling users to enjoy crisper video images on their premium smartphones and tablets.

By adopting e-MMC (embedded multimedia card) 5.0 and USB 3.0 interface for the first time in the industry, the new Exynos application processor boasts fast data transfer speed, a feature that is increasingly required to support advanced processing power on mobile devices so that users can fully experience upgraded mobile computing such as faster booting, web browsing and 3D game loading.

Samsung Exynos 5 Octa incorporates a full HD 60fps (frame per second) video hardware codec engine for 1080p video recording and play-back, an embedded 13 mega-pixel 30fps image signal processor interface for high-quality camera functionality, and 12.8GB/s memory bandwidth interface that enables Full HD Wifi display.
