Apple updates iMac, eMac

934 Continuing their trend of quietly releasing computers with faster processors, Apple has today announced new version of both the iMac and eMac computers.

The iMac is now available in 2 GHz and 1.8 GHz configurations. The 2 GHz, available with 20" and 17" displays and Superdrives, costs $1,799 and $1,499 respectively. The 17" 1.8 GHz comes with a combo drive, and costs $1,299. All the new models come with Airport and Bluetooth modules built in (leaving them out for a lower cost not listed as an option), but, oddly, ship with a regular USB keyboard and mouse. All three models also feature 512 MB of RAM, which means that every iMac now ships with more memory than the low-end PowerMac. Weird.

The eMac also got a small bump, to 1.42 GHz. The high-end version features a SuperDrive, 512 MB of RAM, and a 160 GB hard drive for $999. The low-end features a combo drive, 80 GB hard drive and 256 MB ram.

Another interesting thing to note is that all models that feature a SuperDrive now feature double-layer burning. Also, each new computer, of course, ships with Tiger and iLife '05.

Bill's been using Macs since the late 80s. When he's not making smartass remarks to amuse Kirk Hiner, he enjoys fighting for the user.

And the eMac ships with a 64 mb video card and the iMac with a 128mb one. I don’t know if that is new to those models but it is much more than what I have on my eMac.
