ToyViewer or GraphicConverter?
From Eric Matthieu
Hi Charles,
Given your fondness for ToyViewer, I downloaded it and took it for a spin. While my first impressions of it are quite positive, I wondered how you thought it compares to GraphicConverter (aside from the fact that ToyViewer is free and GraphicConverter is $30 to $35 shareware). I have little experience with either program, and both seem to have great reputations.
Thanks,
Eric
Hi Eric;
Must be planetary alignment or something. My OS X Odyssey 588 column today about the latest version of ToyViewer was finished before I received your note. You can check it out for a detailed discussion, but TV vs. GC is a bit of an apples/oranges comparison. There is some crossover, but Graphic Converter is a much more powerful and full-featured program.
ToyViewer's virtues are that it has a superb interface, is small and fast, and while it is not a full-fledged image-editing program, what it does, it does very well.
And the price is right!

FireFox 0.9 problems with Sneakemail.com
From Alex Mathew
Hi Charles:
I've been reading about your problems with FireFox 0.9 and Panther. I have a problem with FireFox 0.9 and Jaguar (10.2.8) - perhaps one of your readers can test this.
The site:
http://www.sneakemail.com
frequently crashes FireFox 0.9 (but not 0.8) - with a spinning beach ball requiring a forced quit. It seems to be a Javascript issue, but even the webmaster at SneakeMail could not help.
I have filed a bug report - but the latest version of 0.9.1 does the same. I reverted back to 0.8 to check if it was a system problem - but again 0.8 works fine with this site.
I use SneakeMail very frequently so this is a big letdown for me.
Thank you
Alex
Hi Alex;
I have found FireFox essentially useless since the 0.90 build was released. I get two or three page visits before it locks up and requires a force quit. I downloaded version 0.91 this week in hope that the bug would be fixed, but no joy. It behaves exactly the same as 0.90 did.
I even tried trashing the entire FireFox Application Support folder and starting afresh, but still the same issue.
Happily, Mozilla 1.7 is working great for me, and it has taken the place that earlier versions of FireFox filled for the past six months or so.

OS X e-mail
From Eric Matthieu
Charles,
I'm making the transition to OS X and loving it! I had no problem importing all my old e-mail and addresses from Outlook into Mail and Address Book, and while Mail seems to work well... I couldn't help but wonder if there might be something better. Maybe I'll continue using it, as it seems to work pretty well, but you never know. I'm not interested in Entourage (which I know you don't use), but have heard of several alternatives. What program do you prefer?
Something I haven't figured out just yet is the ability to use different identities in Mail, aside from tweaking the name in preferences prior to creating a new message (which is a pain). Do you know of any shortcuts? In Outlook, I had different IDs: one for myself, one for my wife, and one with both our names – all for the same account, but useful if either of us was corresponding professionally. It was a simple matter of toggling the one you wanted before sending the message.
Thanks for any advice you might have.
Warm regards,
Eric
Hi Eric;
Glad your experience with OS X has been positive so far.
As for Mail, You can set up multiple accounts in the Accounts Preferences dialog, and select the desired account to send mail from using the pull-down menu in the compose window.
To set up an additional account(s), just click the little + button at the bottom of the Accounts pane and insert the account information. You can also check for mail in each account individually using the submenu from the Message menu's "Get New Mail" selection.
Which email program do I prefer? I'm an old Eudora hand, and while I've tried out a lot of other email programs, none has ever been successful in wooing me away from Eudora, although I do also use Nisus Email for some of my email accounts to take advantage of its preview before download feature, and also its quick send feature which is unmatched by any other email app. I know of.
However, if I were to switch from Eudora, Mail would probably be where I would go.

Good call. I read Applelinks regularly, because I like your style, down-to-earth low-end Mac SW&HW reports and reviews, NOT because I share (or have any interest whatsoever) on your views on politics, media or religion. These things are of course interesting and significant and worth debating, but I want to look for them elsewhere.
Keep up the good work!
Cheers,
Mika
Thanks for the comments and kind words, Mika.

"I'm having difficulty discerning what your point is. I could just as well ask rhetorically how many hit radio talk shows Michael Moore has conceived and hosted."
Charles
Different audiences, different techniques. We all await Rush's first documentary (perhaps about the ease of abusing prescription drugs) as much as we await Mr Moores next one.
