Mozilla Foundation Announces More Open, Scriptable Plugins Adobe, Apple, Macromedia, Opera and Sun Microsystems Join In

The Mozilla Foundation, in partnership with Adobe, Apple, Macromedia, Opera and Sun Microsystems has announced a series of changes to web browser plugins that will allow web developers to offer richer web browsing experiences, helping to maintain innovation and standards on the Net. The new plugin technologies will be implemented in, among others, upcoming versions of the next generation Mozilla Firefox web browser and the Mozilla 1.x Internet suite and in plugins and browsers developed by the other companies that are supporting this initiative.

In response to demand by users, plugin vendors and web developers for web browser support for an open, secure and scriptable plugin model, the Mozilla Foundation, in collaboration with Adobe, Apple, Macromedia, Opera, and Sun Microsystems are working to extend the Netscape Plugin Application Program Interface (NPAPI) in a manner that allows greater interactivity with plugins such as Flash, Shockwave, QuickTime and Java, resulting in a richer, more interactive web.

Plugins are small programs that web browsers use to display multimedia content that the browsers themselves don't know how to display, such as audio and video. Scriptability of plugins is essential for building an interactive user experience on web pages that use plugins. For example, a user shopping for clothing on a web site that takes advantage of the new plugin capabilities could mix and match different styles and colors for shirts and pants using an interactive Flash movie, and pricing and other information in an associated web page would be updated as a result.

"This initiative will significantly improve the web experience for users of Firefox, the Mozilla 1.x Internet suite, Safari, and Opera browsers and will ultimately benefit the overall health of the web," commented Mitchell Baker, President of the Mozilla Foundation. "Plugins are a critical component of the web experience and require ongoing enhancements and improvements in the way they integrate with world-class browsers. Without these improvements, enhanced interactivity could remain tied to a single, proprietary browser solution, which reduces choice and leads to monoculture on the web. This new initiative makes enhanced interactivity available without locking users in to a specific computing platform or web browser. This will allow users to choose among a range of browsers without sacrificing interactivity. The Mozilla Foundation is proud to provide leadership in this collaborative improvement of the web experience."

"In order to foster a richer experience on the web, we need to enable more dynamic and deep interaction between the browser, the plugin, and web content. This is the first step in that direction; it will give web content developers new, portable options for creating innovative experiences and applications. The Mozilla Foundation and our partners are looking at ways to improve the tools available to content developers, and to provide a better user experience. We are also looking at architectural improvements and performance optimizations that will make plugin updating faster and more reliable," said Brendan Eich, Chief Architect of the Mozilla project.

The new plugin API effort taps into a long standing, deeply rooted desire by plugin vendors to have their plugins work more seamlessly for all browsers and on all computing platforms, including Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. The enhanced plugin API has been collaboratively developed to promote adoption by a broad set of browser and plugin vendors, and will be made available under an open source license.

"Apple is happy to have made a significant contribution to this next generation plugin technology," said Philip Schiller, Apple's Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing. "Apple is a strong advocate for web standards and will ensure that Mac OS X Safari users have access to the latest standards-based web technology."

"Macromedia Flash Player is the leading rich client on the Internet, and as a company we are committed to improving the end user experience," said David Mendels, General Manager, Macromedia. "Macromedia has always supported the Netscape Plugin API, and these improvements will enable developers to deliver rich Internet applications that integrate more holistically with the browser to greatly benefit end users."

"Plugins are a part of the web and it is critical that they interact with browsers and other web content securely and efficiently. Expanding the legacy plugin model from Netscape is a step in the right direction with regard to functionality, interaction and security," said Christen Krogh, VP Engineering, Opera Software. "Opera embraces this initiative in its commitment to innovation and to always deliver the latest technologies for an enjoyable web experience."

In the near future, the Mozilla Foundation will release test versions of its next generation Firefox browser and of Mozilla 1.7 that include the new plugin APIs, allowing plugin vendors to start creating new versions of their plugins that take full advantage of the enhanced plugin capabilities. Details on test builds with these new capabilities, plugin SDKs, and web page scripting examples can be found at http://www.mozilla.org/projects/plugins/ as they become available.

Web browsers capable of supporting the new plugin enhancements, and plugins that take advantage of the new capabilities are expected to ship this Fall. The plugin enhancements will be included, among others, in future versions of Mozilla Firefox, the innovative new web browser from the Mozilla Foundation. Even before its 1.0 release, Firefox has been received to rave reviews by the press and end users alike. The user base of Firefox is doubling every few months and Firefox 0.9 has been downloaded more than 1 million times since its release two weeks ago.

Opera Joins Force With Mozilla, Apple, Macromedia, And Sun Microsystems To Modernize Web

Opera Software hs announced it has joined in alliance with Mozilla, Apple, Macromedia, and Sun Microsystems to develop plugin technologies that will enrich the Internet experience offered with the Web browsers developed by the supporting companies of this initiative. The companies have set to enable developers to build Web browser plugins more securely and efficiently. The announced alliance is working to extend the Netscape Plugin Application Program Interface (NPAPI) to support an advanced plugin model based on open Web standards.

Plugins can be used to display audio or visual multimedia content through applications such as Flash, Shockwave, QuickTime, or Java. Opera Software, now in cooperation with Mozilla, Apple, Macromedia, and Sun Microsystems, will offer the new plugin API to enhance these capabilities, resulting in a richer, more interactive Web experience while using Opera or the other browsers developed by partnering companies.

"Opera is committed to innovation and in supporting the opportunities that offer a better Internet experience," says Christen Krogh, VP Engineering, Opera Software. "Plugins are a permanent part of the rich content Internet users can enjoy. Opera is eager to enhance this experience in joining the lead of its development in the right direction with regard to functionality, interaction and security."

User demand has long called for such actions. The joined companies are responding by providing open source licenses for the API plugin model, spawning more seamless plugins for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.

Details on test builds with these new capabilities, plugin SDKs, and Web page scripting examples can be found at http://www.mozilla.org/projects/plugins/ as they become available.

Parliant PhoneValet Message Center Turns Any Apple Computer Running Mac OS X into a Telephone Communications Hub

Parliant Corporation, world leading developers of computer telephony products for business and consumer use, today announced the shipping of its PhoneValet Message Center (PVMC), the invention that makes any Apple computer running OS X, a telephone communications hub for homes and small businesses. PVMC builds on its existing multi-line computer telephony solution PhoneValet, adding full message center capabilities to its proven, reliable technology.

PhoneValet Message Center includes the hardware and software to do the work of a skilled staffer, greeting callers professionally, announcing each call by voice and on the screen, and permitting the call to be recorded in whole or in part.

Your Macintosh can now provide voice mail, conversation recording, a searchable call history, talking caller id, caller-activated AppleScripting, a fax controller and voice dialing. Parliant's PVMC does all of this, simply, intuitively and elegantly, in the spirit of the Macintosh. PVMC gives a Mac the telephony capabilities the Apple community has always wanted but could never get. Parliant extends Apple's digital hub paradigm to include telephony.

PVMC offers big business efficiencies with a personal touch. Callers can choose to leave messages in one of up to 11 mailboxes (each with a specific greeting) or all mailboxes can be turned off to create an announcement only service. PhoneValet Message Center handles all your phone lines at the same time, and messages can be emailed to your cell phone, home or office.

PVMC adds conversation recording to the product's already impressive call logging features. Inbound and outbound calls are listed in a permanent call history, which is easily searched using only a few letters and numbers, is sortable and exportable and has room for notes. When you choose to record a call, audio is integrated into this comprehensive database for quick retrieval.

Built from the ground up to harness the power of Mac OS X.

Call in to trigger programs on your Mac while you are out

PVMC is a new telephone-based interface to your Macintosh, complementing the traditional screen and keyboard. PVMC can perform AppleScript actions, play audio files over the telephone or speak text to the caller as the request is carried out. Use it to interface with an X-10 home controller, speak the weather from a web site, read you your iCal events, or launch administrative tasks... the possibilities are endless.

PVMC also has the ability to send your phone messages and recorded conversations to your iTunes. Download recorded calls into your iPod in seconds for review before a meeting. The iPod screen displays the name of the caller and the time and date of the call.

PVMC's powerful dialing rules can automate 10-digit, long-distance and calling card dialing. Calls will always be dialed correctly when you dial directly from applications using Apple's Services menu, or through AppleScript from your favorite contact manager or FileMaker. PVMC even offers voice dialing.

With PVMC, you will know who's calling before you answer the phone. Incoming calls are displayed in large type on the screen, and announced over your computer speakers. You can even write AppleScripts to task your contact manager when calls are received.

Typical user experience:

"My phone rings. My Mac speaks the caller's name. My iChat status changes to "On the Phone". My iTunes pauses. My browser launches and Googles the caller's name and address. The call is logged. Conversations are recorded. If I am busy, the message is taken and e-mailed. All without any effort from me. It's a true virtual assistant, my phone valet."

PhoneValet Message Center includes all required hardware and software to help you get more out of your existing telephones. No modem needed. PVMC is now available for $199.95 USD and can be ordered at http://www.parliant.com or 1-866-864-2334.

Groxis Ships Award-Winning Grokker 2 for Apple Mac OS X

Groxis, Inc. has announced the general availability of Grokker 2.1 for the Apple Macintosh platform. The company's groundbreaking software is used for exploring vast collections of documents, journals, photos, and web pages -- visually. Mac users now have a powerful new Internet research tool that lets them search the Web, including Google, Amazon, and others, more deeply and more meaningfully than with a web browser alone. Built for Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar and 10.3 Panther, Grokker is now optimized for Apple's next generation operating system.

"We have been working closely with Apple engineers to optimize the visual experience for the discriminating Macintosh user," stated Jean-Michel Decombe, CTO of Groxis. "We are very excited about our flagship Mac release. It cleverly integrates Apple's Safari web browsing technology with our visual search capability, and much more. Going forward, both the Mac and PC products will now evolve simultaneously, thanks to the Java programming language used to develop Grokker 2," he added.

Users continue to demand more from their information search and retrieval experience, especially as the volumes of online data continue to explode. Groxis recognized early on that this growing problem would not be easily addressed with a search engine and a web browser for much longer. These tools were principally designed to display one page of information at a time, where Grokker can display thousands of pages of information in a meaningful and inspiring way to users of all ages and professions. At Groxis, a thousand words are worth a picture.

"With Grokker 2 now available to Macintosh users, we can more aggressively address the creative and educational markets, where Apple has such a strong presence," said R.J. Pittman, CEO of Groxis. "K-12 and collegiate-level academia is a key market for Grokker, and one that we see tremendous opportunity with the Mac platform. Students and faculty alike are constantly in need of better learning and research tools, and Grokker fits squarely into that box."

Since first previewing its technology in October 2002, Groxis has received accolades from industry watchers, product reviewers, and customers. Grokker 2 has already won appeal with educators, students, and consumer researchers where there has been a growing demand for applications that can help simplifying the process of researching on the Web. The result of a yearlong dialog with early customers and industry experts, Grokker 2 has been significantly improved to make research on the Web easier, more enjoyable, and more efficient for everyone. Educators in both the K-12 and higher education market have already pronounced Grokker 2 an essential project-based learning tool for 2004.
