Environmental Sensitivities

From Paula Mckeown

Hello

I have environmental illness and have been having trouble with my computer lately. I was told that you also have sensitivities and may be able to help in suggesting which models are safest to use for people like us.

Am I writing to the right person? I now have one of the first iMacs which I have had for a long time with no problem, but I have become more sensitive lately and now smell chemicals when it is on, probably from the fan, and also have been told that electomagnetically these models are not good. Also that Apple stopped using flame retardants after 2002. I am looking into a computer box to protect myself, but I was also told that the flat screen models, if I buy second hand or offgas them, are the best bet. Any suggestions? thank you.

Paula McKeown.

Hi Paula;

If you haven't already, please check out my recent article on the topic:
http://www.applelinks.com/pm/more.php?id=1586_0_1_0_M

Unfortunately, there is no slam-dunk answer. The later Macs are better from the fire-retardant chemical angle (especially the aluminum cased models), but they still reek from the chemicals used in their circuit boards, etc.

Personally, I am partial to laptops, and they are certainly a lot easier to encase than a full size desktop Mac.

Flat screen displays (and laptop screens) have the advantage of not getting hot and giving off minimal electomagnetic radiation (I've tested with a gaussmeter, and was able to detect no difference from background levels around the PowerBooks, but CRT monitors were high emitters).

With anything plastic, the older it is the more it will have gassed off, but some circuit board materials still cause me problems after more than five years.

Hope this helps a bit.

Charles

Apple dealers

From BearyandBow

Maybe if Apple dealers actually provided staff that knew what they were talking about, stocked their stores better, or actually advertised to PC users the benefeits of Macs Apple wouldn't have to start its own stores.

One of the reasons I switched from Windows to Mac was that Macs were actually cheaper. Apple has got to get the word out how cheap Macs are to support, how they are cheaper than functional PCs, and you can do things on them you never dreamed were possible on the PC.

How about the aging and underperforming Celeron. For the same price you get for a Celeron that can actually use the Internet properly, you will be paying just as much as the G4 which is much faster.

i agree w/ the sentiment therein but, like you, i've moved on LONG AGO to the point where i don't need/use ANY Micro$oft stuff.

I hear Mellel is great. for my meager needs, I just use Apple's Text Edit.

Later, bud.

Hi Chris;

Leander emailed me when he was researching the article, asking if I still used Word 5.1. I still do occasionally (I have a housand or so old Word 5.1 documents), but I've used Tex Edit Plus as my main text app. since the late '90s.

Word 5.1 is the only Microsoft application that I don't consider seriously flawed.

The inventor of the Web gets his due

From Eolake Stobblehouse

[I am sure most people don't think of the web as something that was invented. It just "is there" like the earth and the sky. But it was invented. And then given away for free, for the common good. - Eolake]
