Bento, the Japanese meal of databases, is back with a new release. Bento 4 brings new printing options (most notably Label printing in addition to printing options that use less ink), new fields such as "Location," the ability to store sound files from mobile media, and a Simple List field that provides a small scale spreadsheet within a record. While not as powerful as FileMaker, Bento is significantly easier to use and, more importantly, is dirt simple when it comes to creating a new databases from scratch. Bento 4 continues to add features and power and still maintains its ease of use and development.

It was only back in November when I first wrote about FileMaker Go for iPad and iPhone. Now, less than a half-year later, we have a big new release, free for current owners of FM Go. Funny thing about apps is that just a minor update in numbers—1.1 to 1.2—and it's a whole new ball game. Some of the limitations about FM Go came from limitations in the iOS; specifically, printing. But now that iOS allows you to print to wireless printers, FM Go can as well. FM Go now supports sliding fields andcharts, and now one can capture signatures in the database. But there's more...

FileMaker is back with another stellar update to its flagship product, FileMaker Pro. I always enjoy seeing what direction each update leads to; sometimes the updates are more for those who create the databases, and sometimes the updates are for the users. This release has a bit more for users and content manipulators, but it's hard to nitpick on this release. For example business users will appreciate the new charting features, while those who collect research data will appreciate the QuickFind and the new highlighting feature. Databases creators will appreciate the new Inspector and a plethora of ways to enhance the users experience. In other words, lots of people will be happy with this release.

MacSpeech Scribe is the first really purpose-designed transcription solution for users who need to work with recorded digital audio files. Scribe has the capability to transcribe with a simple button-click speaker-entered recordings made with an iPhone whenever a thought you want to record occurs, with an iPhone, a dedicated digital voice recorder, or even a mic and your computer, either from a recording of the user's own voice, or that of someone other if you have a voice training profile for them available

Bento, as a Japanese meal, is a box where the various items are cordoned off in small regions. As an application, Bento is a database where each field is cordoned off in small, self-made regions. And a database (so we are all together here) is simply an application that contains data (within fields) that you access easily, quickly, and efficiently. Bento is made by FileMaker, Inc., who also makes the database program FileMaker Pro. FileMaker is probably the best databas application there is. Unfortunately, to construct a full-fledged, full-featured database that's easy to use can be a bit of a challenge. While not as powerful as FileMaker, Bento is easy to use. Now, with Bento 3, it's even better.

If you have a cell phone, any cell phone, you have a database in your pocket. At least if you store any numbers on that phone. Think about it; do you type in the numbers for home every time you call home, or do you scroll through a list of people to find a specific person, find him, and then press the green button. With that in mind, think about how it would be to store a full range of data, facts, numbers, and whatever knowledge you wanted on your iPhone or iPod touch. Well, with Bento for the iPhone or iPod touch, you can. The catch is: can you search for the data you want to find?

I'm not the type of guy to look at my past and wish I could be back there. By and large, I'm happy where I am right now, despite the Minnesota Wild continuing to choke in the Stanley Cup Playoffs (something is most certainly rotten in the State of Hockey). However, I do sometimes lament the fact that today's technology wasn't available to me when I had the time, ambition and friends required to have myself some good adventures. Add to this list, now, the combination of a MacBook and MacJournal 5, because the two work perfectly for the young Mac user living the type of adventure worthy of documenting.

Although my library is not where I hoped it would be at this point in my life, I've still got a decently sized collection that can sometimes be difficult to manage. To whom did I lend the hardcover copy of A Confederacy of Dunces? Which Vonnegut books featured or mentioned Kilgore Trout? Exactly how many first editions do I own at this point? Keeping track of it all can be a daunting task, but there are numerous programs out there to help. My current favorite is Deep Prose Software's Booxter.
