Neverwinter Nights 2 RPG review26867

Neverwinter Nights 2I was thrilled when Aspyr announced they'd be releasing Neverwinter Nights 2. Although you can possibly still find the two expansion packs for Neverwinter Nights from MacSoft, and there is some downloadable content, it's great to see the Mac isn't getting left behind as the franchise grows. But, as Neverwinter Nights 2 indicates, growth isn't always for the best. You see, Neverwinter Nights 2 suffers some growing pains, I'm afraid, exacerbated by the fact that they're not necessary.

Tomb Raider Anniversary game review15747

Tomb Raider AnniversaryIt's no secret to any of our long-time readers that I'm quite a fan of the Tomb Raider franchise. As such, I've been perhaps too forgiving of some of Lara's later outings, which lost their way a bit. This is understandable, as the developers had to do something to keep the games fresh. Unfortunately, the decisions weren't the right ones; the later games shifted the focus from exploring to action, introduced other playable characters, and basically lost their sense of imagination. Rather than continue this trend, Tomb Raider Anniversary takes us back to the first game, updating it with modern gaming technology, larger environments and new moves. The end result is a little bit hit and a little bit miss, but still manages to be the best Tomb Raider game since Tomb Raider II.

Penumbra Overture adventure/horror game review12244

Penumbra OverturePenumbra Overture begins like 95% of all adventure/horror games before it; a mysterious letter from a dead/dying/missing parent/uncle/colleague entices the main character out of his/her bitterness/college studies to explore a mansion/ruins/Nazi mining facility. I certainly hope I never receive such a letter, as my life isn't conducive to packing up and flying to Egypt on a moment's notice so I can light a torch and pull a couple levers in some unexplored catacomb that could lead to space/Atlantis/space Atlantis. Don't take this as criticism, though. I found the familiarity of Penumbra Overture's plot to be endearing, actually—like dusting off an old book for another read.

Avernum V turn-based RPG review13909

Avernum 5Avernum 5 is a sterling example of what role-playing games can and should be. It has all of the qualities that pull you into the game for hours and hours, such as a fully customizable party with control over how the members develop, being rewarded for exploring (and there's a lot of land to explore), quests with rewards and experience, a story that reveals itself bit by bit until you're forced to make a decision as to where your loyalties lie, characters with actual personalities, and a turn-based combat system which requires strategy to do well.

Neon Tango arcade/action game review5813

Neon TangoNeon Tango is about flying around and blowing stuff up. Plenty of stuff. Wave after wave of stuff you may or may not be able to identify, but that you know needs to be blown up because it's there. You pilot a lone cybership flying through...something. I don't think the location is actually identified, but it could very well be above the Game Grid in the movie Tron. I wouldn't have been surprised to see a couple Light Cycles whiz by below or have Bruce Boxleitner throw a frisbee at my head. This is because Neon Tango is neon. It glows. Think of those old vector-based arcade games such as Asteroids and Battlezone, only in hyper-color, if such a term exists. And with more action. And prettier explosions. And insane boss battles.

Hordes of Orcs tower defense game review9070

Hordes of OrcsOkay, so my sources tell me there's a new trend in video games that's quite popular online. It must've started by some high school math teacher or student, who one day decided that rather than worrying about identifying Y so we could understand exactly how X got from A to B, we should instead worry about arming Y to prevent X from getting from A to B. The developers at MrJoy apparently got more out of senior math than I did, as they've now presented us with Hordes of Orcs. Here, A is "The Glowing Portal of Really Bad Things That We Should Have Bricked-Up a Long Time Ago" and B is your village. Y is an assortment of defense towers, walls and spells, and X is...well...a horde of orcs.

Drop Point Alaska extreme sports game review7586

Drop Point: AlaskaI had to go all the way back to the (far too many) Tony Hawk reviews to remember how to play games such as this. In Tony Hawk, the point was to skate around town and do tricks off of various objects in order to get points or money or something to upgrade your equipment or outfits or something and unlock other levels or something. That's pretty much the same here, or something, except you're on a scenic mountain, not in some depressed urban community. That makes Drop Point Alaska a bit more inviting, as it's set somewhere you'd maybe actually want to be.

Neverwinter Nights 2 RPG preview13361

Neverwinter Nights 2Neverwinter Nights 2, which should be on store shelves this weekend and is available for order from Aspyr's website, carries on the tradition of other Dungeons & Dragons sanctioned role-playing games in that it offers a deep story to discover, a huge world to explore, countless spells to learn and weapons to master, many battles to fight, and even a little romance.

Tiger Woods PGA 08 review9247

You like playing golf but don't have the time or money to get to a course and definitely can't get into some of the more famous clubs such as Westchester Country Club, TPC Boston, Cog Hill and East Lake. Enter Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08, the third in the series, and the latest to promise realism and an interactive gameplay. Is the game a good substitute for the real thing?

Bomberman - iPod game review15086

BombermanIn Bomberman, you play a robot who has grown bored working at a bomb factory, and wants to get out. You know, because he's every man's Bomberman. Who doesn't get bored with their daily job and tries to flee 20 levels to the open outdoors? The difference between us and Bomberman, however, is that we don't have to navigate mazes, bomb enemies, find secret doors and battle bosses to leave our jobs. Well, except for Wal-Mart employees, anyway.
