Quicksilver B58 Released - Application Launcher And Much More

Software UpdatesSoftware NewsUtilitiesCommentsTell-a-Friend
An Application launcher and much more Quicksilver is described by its developers as a unified, extensible interface for working with applications, contacts, music, and other data.

Anyone using a computer (and the Macintosh is no exception) spends a lot of time locating files and applications, and then carrying out actions on those items. The Finder is a reasonably good tool for getting a visual overview of the contents of your disk, but it isn't ideal for quickly locating more.

At first glance, Quicksilver is a launcher.

When opened, it will create a catalog of applications and some frequently used folders and documents. Activate it, and you can search for and open anything in its catalog instantly. The search is adaptive, so Quicksilver will recognize which items you are searching for based on previous experience. It also supports abbreviations, so you can type entire words, or just fragments of each. When not in use, Quicksilver vanishes, waiting for the next time you summon it.

Other Actions

Quicksilver's greatest strength, however, is not search. Any item you are able to find, drag, or otherwise pull into its universe is endowed with many potential uses. Hitting takes you to the action field, where you can use the same adaptive search to select what you would like to do. Among other things, files can be emailed, copied, compressed. Text can be modified, transmitted between programs, or searched for on the web. Some actions even support an indirect object, so you can send an item to a person, move files to another folder, or open files with a specific application.

image

Quicksilver can be given the ability to understand the data inside of files, allowing you to work with data in new, faster ways. Plug-ins add both new items and new actions, allowing you to run scripts, send instant messages, dial phone numbers, look up words in a dictionary, queue up songs in iTunes party shuffle, and much, much more.

Frequently used commands can be bound to triggers, giving you the ability to execute them immediately by hitting a hot key or using the mouse on a corner or edge of the screen.

Wei Wu Wei - Act Without Doing

In the end, Quicksilver has one very important effect: the effort of frequent tasks fades into the background and you are able to act without thinking. After an adaptation period, Quicksilver becomes an extension of yourself; the process fades away leaving only the results. 1)

1) Thanks to Lao-tze and S. Mitchell

• Fix lingering issue PjRobertson found

• Fixed single/double tap Modifier Key Activation

Version 1.0b57:

• Default compiler changed to Clang, Apple's and the Open Source community's next gen compiler. By doing that a 20 to 40% increase in runtime speed was gained while managing a catalog library with approx. 13k items. Quicksilver also feels a lot snappier too. This, of course, is mostly subjective (read: YMMV).

• Actions should now appear localized again where appropriate. (e.g. 'Copy to...' for example in German could also be typed as 'Bewegen nach...' or 'Open' as 'Ouvrir' in French. .lproj folders for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Danish, Finish, Norwegian, Polish, and Swedish have been included. Mind you, the end result really depends on how Mac OS X handles this in the target language as Quicksilver just asks the OS for the localized representation of some common actions).

• Composed characters like German umlauts (e.g. '') will now show both parts (the letter 'a' and the 'dots'. Previously only letters would show up).

• The broken action menu now shows up with a cross-selection of all enabled actions from the Actions preferences.

• The Smart Replace and Replace dialog actions no longer crash Quicksilver and will now actually append numbers via a smart numbering system if a file to be copied or moved already exists at the destination. In order to use the Smart Replace dialog you will need to set the feature level equal to or higher than 3.To do that enter the following exactly into the Terminal and press Return: defaults write com.blacktree.Quicksilver "Feature Level" 3

• File operation requiring credentials no longer crash QS after providing the password.

• The Large Type action now keeps the text visible again for prolonged periods.

• Icons associated with custom file actions (e.g. like custom AppleScript actions) are now correctly displayed instead of a generic file placeholder icon.

• AppleScript actions which return something now cause Quicksilver to reappear again ready to use the result for the next action.

• Mouse tracking for triggers ('Mouse entered' / 'Mouse exited') now seems to work more reliably.

• The Extras pref pane no longer has a row spacing issue upon first loading of the associated NIB file.

• Excessive log outputs have been silenced to only occur if certain debugging environment variables are set in order to avoid spamming the Console.

• Dozens of API upgrades like replacing deprecated methods with safer variants or adding declaration names for the new way of handling informal protocols.

• All NIB files were converted to a SCM and collaboration friendly XIB format. A lot of clipping warnings have been fixed.

• Triggers with weird keys (like Function keys) are now displayed again.

• Updated French and German localization.

• Various other housekeeping tasks.

Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

iPaperPad Available In The US Now

HardwareCommentsTell-a-Friend
Netmeme today announced that its iPaperPad, which isn't magical or revolutionary, is available for purchase on Amazon.

image

"iPaperPad is not new, it's a paper pad." Said Netmeme CEO Peter. "It's not that exciting, but it delivers much more bang for your buck than an iPad if all you want to do is impress people in coffee shops or at the workplace."

Starting at just $4.99 for a 25 page paper pad vs. the $499.00 starting price for an iPad, the iPaperPad is a notepad which has the same size and look as an Apple iPad. The iPaperPad is slightly smaller than a standard notepad and providing a more "intimate" experience. Because of its smaller size it is also lighter than a standard notepad and it requires no batteries making it the obvious choice over the iPad for airplane flights lasting over 10 hours.

image

iPaperPad's un-revolutionary paper surface makes for a traditional experience. You can read and write mail on iPaperPad pages and glue photos onto the paper. The removable pages allow you to create albums and slideshows. By leaving the page bindings intact you can also use the iPaperPad as a flipbook.

There is not an app store with 150,000 apps but the iPaperPad supports all existing writing instruments, scissors, and glue currently compatible with paper technology. This includes any items previously purchased by an iPaperPad customer for manipulating paper. There are no developers currently creating exciting paper manipulating items for the iPaperPad.

image

This is the only model. When it sells out it's gone. If we can't sell our entire inventory in the US we will try to sell them in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK. If we get really desperate we will ship in additional countries, except Greece.

Starting at $4.99

$14.97 for a three pad pack

25 pages per pad. Use one, share two with friends.

Postbox now integrates with the Mac OS X Address Book and iCal and extends search to work with Spotlight, making the entire workflow more efficient and intuitive. Postbox gives users powerful new ways to find, use, and view email messages and content, organize work life, and simply get stuff done. After being named to the industry-leading TechCrunch50 in September 2008, Postbox has continued developing and adding key features to create a powerful and unique email experience.

"Since we launched Postbox 1.0 in September, we've been extremely focused on optimizing the user's workflow, from within Postbox and across the computing environment," said Sherman Dickman, co-founder of Postbox. Postbox provides support for Mac OS X Spotlight technology to search through message bodies and message header information such as subject or sender. Spotlight can even be used to search for messages that contain attachments by file name.

"Mac users have very high standards, and are sensitive to even the smallest changes in their workflow," said Scott MacGregor, co-founder of Postbox. "Postbox's support for the Address Book, iCal, Spotlight, and other applications provides our Mac users with a more powerful combination of communications tools and technologies, while preserving the working styles they've become accustomed to."

Bi-directional image exchange with iPhoto and more:
Postbox can now export images received in email directly into iPhoto, and images within iPhoto can now be emailed using Postbox as the preferred email application. Serving Sizer Pro Recipe Converter and Cookbook Released for iPhone

iPhoneiPhone SoftwareiPodiPod SoftwareCommentsTell-a-Friend
Finding recipes is easier than ever with the popularity of cooking channels, online sources, clubs, and celebrity chefs. However, people often find themselves wanting to make the latest recipe for a different number of guests. Serving Sizer Pro meets this need by easily scaling entire recipes from one serving size to another without having to think about fraction math and saves the recipe to resize again later.

Creative Algorithms is pleased to announce the release of Serving Sizer Pro Recipe Converter and Cookbook, software for your iPhone and iPod touch, that easily scales recipes' ingredients proportionally, based on serving sizes, and saves them for future resizing. Convert a favorite celebrity chef's recipe that serves eight to one that serves a dinner party of five, and later for a group of 17 holiday guests.

Upsize a favorite family recipe to cater for a large crowd. Scale down a six serving recipe to a romantic dinner for two. Translate a recipe from a European cookbook to US weights and measures--easily toggling between Metric and US units. Serving Sizer "is perfect for customizing recipes for families, large groups, or even small ones," writes TheiPhoneMom blog. "It gives you the ability to take a recipe and tweak it to fit your family's size....It's extremely easy to use." The new Pro version adds recipe storage for scaling and re-scaling recipes as needed.

How it works: Enter a recipe by picking ingredients from a list of 500 preloaded ingredients or by adding your own. Pick amounts and units with beautifully designed custom sliders. Enter the recipe's original servings, the desired number of servings, and Serving Sizer Pro accurately converts each measurement, automatically optimizing to the minimum number of steps, such as one cup and one tablespoon, instead of 17 tablespoons. Tap on the recipe index card to read the wholly converted recipe on one scrollable screen, or email it to your friends and family. It's just that simple.

Device Requirements:
* iPhone and iPod touch
* Requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later
* 0.9 MB

Serving Sizer Pro 1.0 is available on the iTunes AppStore at a sale price of $2.99 (USD) in the Productivity category. A lighter version, which converts one ingredient at a time, is also available for $0.99.

Google Chrome 5.0.356.2 Beta Web Browser Released For Mac - With Extensions And More

Software UpdatesInternetSoftware NewsCommentsTell-a-Friend
On Thursday, Google released another updated version (Chrome 5.0.356.2 ) of the Mac beta Web browser

Google Chrome is a beta web browser by Google, created to be a modern platform for web pages and applications. It utilizes very fast loading of web pages and has a V8 engine, which is a custom built JavaScript engine. Because Google has used parts from Apple's Safari and Firefox browsers, they made the project open source.

Google Chrome Blog says:

Since we released Chrome for Mac in beta last December, we've been busy adding new features. Today, after some incubation in the developer channel, we're happy to make some of these features more widely available. The new beta release of Chrome for Mac offers extensions, bookmark sync, and more.

With this new version, you'll be able to install any of over 2,200 extensions (and counting!) currently available in Chrome's extensions gallery. Extensions can add useful, informative, fun, or quirky functionality to the browser. You can manage your extensions by clicking on the Window menu and choosing "Extensions."

For this release, we remained focused on providing a snappy, safe, and simple browsing experience on the Mac. If you haven't tried Chrome on the Mac yet and are curious about its features, this video will take you on a brief tour:

Those of you who use several computers will now be able to keep your bookmarks synchronized between them. If some of your computers aren't Macs, don't worry: bookmark sync works in Chrome for Linux and Windows too. We also added bookmark and cookie managers in a way that feels completely at home on the Mac. For technically-oriented users, our new Task Manager will help you keep tabs on all of your tabs.

If you're not using Chrome yet, you can try all of these new features out by downloading the Google Chrome Beta for Mac. Existing Chrome users should be automatically updated to the new beta within the next day just check the About window and look for version 5.0.307.

Google Chrome is a web browser that runs web pages and applications with lightning speed. Here are a few creative interpretations of Google Chrome's key features:

Speed
Google Chrome loads pages and runs web applications in a snap.

Stability
Google Chrome is built for stability. If an individual tab freezes or crashes, the other tabs are unaffected.

Security
Browse the web more safely with malware and phishing protection built into Google Chrome.

New Tab page
Visit your favorite websites easily from the New Tab page. When you open a new tab, the sites you visit most often are readily available.

Omnibox
Use the Omnibox to type both web addresses and searches in Google Chrome.

Themes
Customize your browser with themes from artists around the world.

Incognito mode
When you don't want your website visits to be recorded in your browser history, you can browse in incognito mode. (A handy feature for planning surprise gifts and birthdays!)

New in version 5.0.356.2:
• We have released Google Chrome 5.0.356.2 to the Dev channel on Windows and Mac to fix an issue where dragging anything with your mouse would freeze the tab

New in Google Chrome 5.0.342.5:
• A lot of improvements to the bookmark bar on the Mac. Note that there's still an issue with folders with a lot of bookmarks. • A workaround is to use the bookmark menu in the menu bar.
• A lot of improvements to the quality of form Autofill

New in version 5.0.307.9:
