In this week's The Road Warrior on MacOpinion, Charles Moore revives his WallStreet PowerBook 15 months after its CPU died, and explores possible reasons why it melted down.
I’m still curious about what made the original processor fail. Of course there’s always “stuff happens” fatalism, and processor failure has not been a notably epidemic problem with WallStreet PowerBooks, but there is a reason for everything. For example, there is a reason why many new 15 in. aluminum PowerBooks are getting “ white spots” on their displays, although just what is as yet unclear, and a reason why some Dual USB iBooks suddenly develop malfunctions with the video circuitry on their motherboards. In the latter case, as well as with my WallStreet’s processor meltdown, the short explanation is probably “heat.” Heat is an enemy of electrical componentry, and Apple laptops from the G3 era forward all have relatively torrid internal temperatures to contend with compared with their 68k and 603e predecessors.
