OS X Odyssey 436 - Speed Find X v1.2 Utility and PrefsMenu 1.2.1 Menulet

Thursday, October 30, 2003

Speed Find X v1.2

SpeedFindX is a Mac OS X application that searches for files on all currently mounted and formerly mounted drives. The program uses the locate database from within Mac OS X’s core unix OS to retrieve the search results. The size of searches results are un-limited.

Searches are case sensitive, A “Help” Cocoa drawer contains handy tips on searching syntax.

SpeedFind X seemed to work as advertised. It has an attractive interface, and is quick. Personally, I found the UNIX search syntax requirements unintuitive, and the search results are not double-clickable, so I’m wondering a bit about the utilitarian value of this program. I’m assuming that some folks will find it useful.

New in this version:
• Fixes to the GUI & speed improvements for cacheing information.

System requirements:
Mac OS X v10.1.3 or later

PrefsMenu 1.2.1 Puts System Preferences In The Menu Bar

PrefsMenu is a handy little applet that adds a menu to right side of the menubar allowing quick and easy access to System Preferences.

PrefsMenu works fine, and is more convenient than going to the Dock to open a particular Preference panel. It’s an application rather than a system add-on, which I consider preferable. If you want it to load automatically, pop an alias in the Startup Items folder.

New in this version:
• fixed bug where pref panes could appear twice in Panther
• fixed bug where Haxies and Other group labels were visible when there’s nothing in them

System requirements:
• Mac OS X 10.1 or better

PrefsMenu is freeware

Panther on 500 MHz iBook

From Chris Long

C:

No time to write -- very briefly:

Installed Panther last night on my iBook (500MHz G3, remember?) -- went without a hitch, AND:

runs considerably faster than Jaguar!!!

Gotta love it!

Not crazy about the metal appearance (ugh) or those space-eating sidebars, but I can live w it, given its faster speed.

Nice!

Thanks for the encouraging report, Chris.
