Today's Microsoft bad-boy story involves the company's rigging of Windows XP to hijack users and dump them at a Microsoft-owned site when searching for online music. Oh, they wouldn't do that, would they? Yes they would, actually. A helpful reader sent us the following links, which you may want to visit for further information: http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,60899,00.html?tw=wn_tophead_6 http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1104_2-5094144.html Even the ever-reluctant Feds may have to take notice of this at least long enough to send it back to the courts, then work out yet another deal before the circus starts up again. We're not covering this one in depth because there's only so much time in a day to list Microsoft's sins, but what's really going on here is Redmond purposefully limiting the functionality of its flagship operating system to the greater enrichment of Microsoft Corporation. The "feature" involved even launches Internet Explorer to accomplish this hustle, regardless of which browser is designated as the default. Yes, Apple's vertical organization means that Mac users may sometimes suffer from similarly directed choices, but this is mostly up-front and we don't mind so much. But Microsoft is supposed to be controlling itself, under penalty of law.
