Comments: Apple Laptops Selling Like Crazy

Monday, October 6, 2003

By Applelinks Senior Editor John H. Farr

That's right, market share is bursting at the seams. Macworld UK has what they say are exclusive figures from IDC, but of course they just posted them on their Web site, so now we have them too (duh!).

At any rate, you'll be glad to know that Apple has grabbed 4.1 percent of world laptop sales since the last quarter, up from 3.5 percent. And here in the U.S., Apple just hit 7 percent. Portables represent an ever-increasing share of all computer sales, and Apple has some of the best laptops in the world. Apple has done very well in the UK, incidentally, where the current 3.8 percent share stands out next to first-quarter 2001's .9 percent figure.

So what's wrong with this picture? Not a darned thing, except that it got us focusing on market share again, a subject whose valuation is fraught with peril and which often raises far more questions than it answers. But go ahead and applaud for now, Apple's earned it.
