Apple Pen Antics

Thursday, October 2, 2003

By Applelinks Senior Editor John H. Farr

Hah! So what if there isn't any news, we'll just make up our own! See this? We found it on Steve Jobs' desk and stole it for our cat to play with. Maybe you'd like one, too. That's fine, but you'll have to ask Hobbes. And no, you can't buy one. We had to steal ours, remember.

That's Hobbes the Wonder Cat, however, and he isn't giving out his email address. But that's a genuine Apple pen he's about to try to swallow. The pen is in sleep mode now, but if he really goes for it, watch out! In the grand tradition of the Macintosh, it only has one button, and here's what that button does:

Is that cool or what? Don't you wish your PowerMac did this? (Hey, maybe it does, but you just haven't found the switch yet.) Did we mention this was an "Apple pen"? Well, it is. We didn't even know there was such a thing until Steve stepped out of the office and left us alone for a minute.

It's made in China, just like everything else these days except customer service excuses (not Apple's!): those are made in India now, we understand. Last night a very Indian voice called us to ask us to contribute to a state police charity of some kind.Of all the things to outsource, telephone solicitations from your own cops.

A great pen, though. Hefty, too. Our only question is, where do we get glowing warp drive refills?
