Comments: "Security" Suit Against Microsoft?

Thursday, October 2, 2003

By Applelinks Senior Editor John H. Farr

According to Reuters, Microsoft may be about to face a class-action lawsuit that claims software security holes could lead to "massive, cascading failures" in global computer networks. The law that relates to this is a California statute guaranteeing the privacy of personal information in computer databases.

It remains to be seen whether this has any traction or not. Microsoft may in fact be protected from this kind of legal attack by what's contained in that tiny fine print on the software packages. Or by judges. Or by the Justice Department. Or by political advantage. Or by cultural cynicism and despair. We admit to having a soupçon of the latter and doubt that anything short of the massive, cascading failure predicted by the plaintiffs' lawyer will ever have much effect. We're glad the security issue is getting more attention these days, of course.
