Friday, September 26, 2003

By Applelinks Senior Editor John H. Farr

Philips, Europe's largest consumer electronics company, wants to prevent "a few companies from controlling the digital world," according to an interview Larry Blanford, Philips' chief for its North American Consumer Electronics operations, gave to Reuters today in Amsterdam.

The context for the talk was Philips ongoing discussions with current and would-be Internet music retailers, including Apple, Dell, Viacom, and others. Philips plans to introduce new devices for playing digital music and wants the broadest possible application. For that reason teh company has already decided not to support Microsoft's Windows Media Player in its consumer electronics products. As Blanford explained,

"We need a technology that works, that is available to everyone, managed in a fair way and not constrained to any particular group."
