Anyone wondering what all the fuss was (is) about with the OS X 10.2.8 upgrade that Apple posted and then pulled down for more work (whittle, whittle, sand, sand) need only read the MacInTouch reader reports on this page. There are a few positive comments, but these are generally tales of things that don't work. A LOT of things that don't work. None of which should be surprising, of course. Apple can't test all possible combinations of hardware and software, especially considering all the different variables resulting from human behavior, the physical environment, and so on. That's where you come in. So what if your battery life just fell by 50 percent? Who cares if you can't access the Internet? And do you really mind that all your file mappings were changed? Please note that these things haven't happend to everyone, and some early adopters are simply delighted. Our point is that those of you with the time to download and install the latest operating system upgrades at the earliest possible moment are on the front lines and have every reason to be proud. How else would anyone know about what still needs to be fixed if you weren't having problems? You selflessly give your time and energy so that the folks back home can install their upgrades weeks later, secure in the knowledge they won't regret it. You don't really mind your sacrifices, anyway. You want to have the latest software and you usually do. Most of you have broadband, or you couldn't have moved so quickly on this. And that means that as soon as Apple reposts the update, you'll be the first to try that, and any problems you're having will disappear. The Mac army depends on its geeks. Fight the bugs, follow the fixes, frequent the forums, and have an extra ration of rum this evening. You've earned it.
