SubRosaSoft DiskGuardian 2.1 Disk Repair, Diagnostics & Reporting

SubRosaSoft DiskGuardian is a collection of tools and helpers that help guard the data on your disks. Integrating SMART monitoring, HFS+ Journaling, Volume Repair, Surface Scanning, Hardware Integrity Checking, Benchtesting, Backup/Restore and Online Reporting, it not only diagnoses and repairs disks, but it can predict many problems long before they occur.

Keeping the focus on guarding data, DiskGuardian performs scheduled regular checks on your hard drive, and will report to your eMail, Web Server, or to reports on your disk.

If any failures are detected you can use the backup and restore functions to recover data long after other Disk Utilities have given up.

The latest version, 2.1 includes a menu command to search for disks that were not mounted (even those that are not mountable). In addition to drive repair, a user can now backup an unmounted drive which is extremely useful as the repair can be made to the clone drive without risking the original. It can also perform a surface scan to help diagnose the cause.

This software is sold as a downladable package and on CD

DiskGuardian is started up each time you startup your computer. It will setup background monitor tools (included within DiskGuardian) that help predict upcoming hardware problems, then display the window shown below.

On the left hand column there is a list of all of your currently mounted volumes, and various information about them. You can click on a volume in this column and then select an action to perform on it from the right hand column. The right hand column has a range of features:

• Backup/Restore Create a bootable copy of any operating system from any kind of media. This allows you to create an exact byte-by-byte replicate of any mounted local volume (including OS X startup disks, CD's, DVD's, etc), and a feature to restore these mirrors back to a volume. This uses a fault tolerant copy methods so it can be used to recover data from drives that have hardware faults, such as scratched CD's, or media with faults on it.

• Volume Repair Repair most hard disk faults. An advanced diagnostic and repair tool which will detect and fix most errors on a volume, and can enable and disable Apple journaling. Apple's new journaled file system keeps a log of the hard disk's main data activity. In the case of a crash or other system failure, the file system can retrieve lost data by consulting the "journal" log, restoring the system to its previous state instead of having to go through the lengthy process of rebuilding it. It is important to note that enabling Journaling can potentially slow disk access time down by up to 10%, but can be preferable in situations where data stability is more important than disk access speed

• Benchtest A full benchmarking suite. This is a full benchmarking suite with saved results from other Macintosh systems, allowing you to test your system against others.

• Hardware Integrity Thoroughly test all of a disk's data, and data space. This performs long term speed testing and throughput measuring, it is intended for finding intermittent hardware faults.

• Surface Scan Test every available part of a disk's surface. This performs a surface scan (reads all blocks) of a volume to ensure that there are no media faults (this works on any local mountable disks, all interfaces (ATA/IDE, FireWire, etc) are supported).

• Settings Configure DiskGuardian. Configure scheduling for DiskGuardian. Setup your eMail, FTP, or Webserver addresses for the optionally used reporting feature, and edit the display characteristics of DiskGuardian.

S.M.A.R.T. is a widely supported standard in IDE hard drives. The technology was created and adopted by the disk industry due to the understanding that most hard drives sometime fail, and that it is usually possible for a drive to be able to predict that it will fail before it does, by monitoring various aspects of itself such as its motor, media heads, spin up time, and other manufacturer-specific parameters. The S.M.A.R.T. software built into DiskGuardian asks the drive's on the computer for their S.M.A.R.T. status every 5 minutes, and alerts you if a problem has been detected.

DiskGuardian's version of S.M.A.R.T. (Self Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) transparently checks the health of your drives from the time your computer starts up, until it shuts down. The S.M.A.R.T. check is always running in the background, and DiskGuardian will be started automatically if a problem is detected. S.M.A.R.T. checking does not affect on the performance of your drive (as may be determined with the "Speed Test" feature in DiskGuardian), and the always-running background helper program that does this checking is very lightweight, and uses very little resources.

New in this version:
• Added a menu command to search for disks that were not mounted at startup
• Can now backup a drive even if it cant be mounted
useful for making repairs to it without risking the original
• Can now surface scan and repair drives that are not mounted
useful for diagnosing and repairing disks that are too corrupted to mount

System requirements:
• Mac OS X 10.0 or higher
• SMART functions require 10.2 or higher

SubRosaSoft DiskGuardian sells for $69.95

Competitive upgrades are available. Utilities such as Drive10, TechTools Pro, SMART Toolkit, Norton Utilities, and Disk Warrior all qualify for the $54.95 crossgrade.

The update is free to current users and a demo can be downloaded from:

WiebeTech Introduces First Forensic FireWire 800 / USB2 Reader

WiebeTech has announced the introduction of Forensic800 Case and its companion ForensicUSB2 Case, claimed to be the world's first forensic readers featuring FireWire 800 and USB2.

"Forensic Case allows users to capture evidence in the field much more quickly using either FireWire 800 or USB 2.0 interfaces. It also fully supports legacy FireWire 400 and USB interfaces," said James Wiebe, CEO of WiebeTech.

This product is also lightweight and features a "rigid drive connector" which is designed to allow drives to be easily attached and removed. The rigid drive connector was developed after user feedback from WiebeTech's Forensic DriveDock, which features a similar drive connector. The implementation of this connector in the Forensic Case allows a slight amount of movement to either side or up or down, allowing easy alignment and attachment of any IDE drive without bending pins on any brand of drive.

Forensic Case may also convert between field mode (with protective drive cover removed) and office mode (with protective cover attached) in less than 60 seconds.

A movie has been posted on the WiebeTech website at http://www.wiebetech.com/products/forensiccase.html showing the easy de-attachment and attachment of a drive to Forensic Case utilizing the rigid drive connector. The case is then converted to office mode from field mode. The entire unedited length of the video is less than 55 seconds.

"We believe that Forensic Case will become a new standard for forensic investigations of suspect computer systems," said Wiebe. "With highest transfer rates and tremendous ease of use, this product provides the opportunity to pay for itself in time savings the first day it is used."

Forensic Case is available in a combo version, featuring multiple FireWire ports and a USB 1.1/2.0 port, and also in a version with just USB 1.1/2.0.

Forensic800 Case is compatible with Linux, recent versions of Windows, and recent versions of the Mac OS. No drivers are provided or needed for operation in any of these environments. ForensicUSB2 is compatible with recent versions of Windows. USB Operation is not supported on Mac computers.

New EPSON Stylus CX5400 Scan-Print-Copy Device Combines Variety of Imaging Tools and DuraBrite Inks

Epson has once again combined the forces of its acclaimed DuraBrite inks and the company's award-winning scanning technology -- this time to create an ideal home/office product, the EPSON Stylus CX5400. This new space-saving device triples as a scanner, printer and color copier, offering a high-end combination of features and performance including Epson's new photo restoration technology on the scanner.

"This truly is an outstanding value for those who appreciate high productivity and great image quality," said Andreas Goehring, senior product manager, Epson. "Not only does this product fulfill nearly all the demands of their text, graphics and copying needs, but it can also produce very good photo-quality images that last for years."

Priced for $149 (suggested retail price), the EPSON Stylus CX5400 prints documents and text quickly, up to 22 pages per minute (ppm) in black and up to 11 ppm in color(a). It also operates more quietly from start to finish than its predecessor, the EPSON Stylus CX5200, resulting from a newly designed engine and mechanism.

The Stylus CX5400 offers frame-ready, borderless photographs and up to 5,760 x 1,440 optimized dpi and ultrafine three-picoliter ink droplets for sharp, vivid images. It also takes advantage of a convenient and cost-effective individual ink cartridge system.

In addition to high-speed color printing, the Stylus CX5400 features a stand-alone color copier and high-performance, full-function scanner. This built-in 1200 x 2400, 48-bit color scanner includes exclusive EPSON Easy Photo Fix software, which gives users an easy solution for restoring color to old photographs. The Stylus CX5400 also delivers fully automated scanning plus two advanced scanning modes for advanced custom control.

New EPSON Smart Panel software enables users to quickly scan photos, text or graphics with extreme detail to the Internet, an e-mail software program or a faxing software program. Users can also produce long-lasting, high-resolution color copies without even turning on their personal computer.

The EPSON Stylus CX5400 uses DuraBrite inks for natural, vibrant-looking colors and is designed to produce impressive looking, durable output that is water-resistant, light-resistant and smudge-resistant. Because DuraBrite inks are pigment-based inks, output from DuraBrite inks can be submerged in water without the ink coming off the page, unlike dye-based inks, which typically run and smudge. This feature is designed to give creators of photographs, fliers, menus, signs, postcards and any other printed output the ability to produce documents and images that will withstand damage caused by moisture-based threats such as rain, spills, humidity or people with wet hands. Bleed-through is also reduced since DuraBrite inks rest on the surface of the paper, which is ideal for applications that require double-sided printing.

The EPSON Stylus CX5400 offers great results on different types of media ranging from ordinary plain paper to DuraBrite Ink Glossy Photo Paper, the newest paper to join the wide assortment of Epson media. This new paper was designed especially for use with DuraBrite ink to create bright, beautiful, borderless glossy prints that are water-resistant, light-resistant and smudge-resistant. DuraBrite Ink Glossy Photo paper will be available in two sizes - 4" x 6" (50 sheet packs) and letter size (20 sheet packs) -- for $9.99 and $12.99, respectively, and will be available at the end of September. This new all-in-one also supports a variety of other Epson specialty media including Epson Premium Bright White Paper, Glossy Photo Paper, Matte Paper Heavyweight, and Ink Jet Transparencies.

The EPSON Stylus CX5400 includes four separate "snap-in/snap-out" ink cartridges to maximize ink yield - one extra-large black ink cartridge and three color ink cartridges (cyan, yellow and magenta). Since these individual color inks can be replaced at any time, efficiency is maximized, lowering the total cost of ownership. Each cartridge also contains a chip that relays ink level information on the screen to the user via the printer driver, while self-sealing valves preserve the inks up to six months once removed from the printer. Therefore, reinserted cartridges that haven't been fully depleted can be reinserted for later use.

The EPSON Stylus CX5400 works with both Windows and Macintosh platforms and is capable of large-quantity printing when needed. The printer's paper input tray holds up to 150 sheets of plain paper. It uses USB connectivity and includes a USB cable in the box.

The Stylus CX5400 is currently shipping to computer superstores and specialty retail stores nationwide and can also be purchased through mail order, PC manufacturers, the Internet and Epson's own site at http://www.epsonstore.com. This product also carries a one-year Epson Exchange Limited Warranty, enabling customers to receive a replacement printer if a problem cannot be corrected by telephone technical support. It is also supported by the EPSON Connection(SM), a customer support and technical assistance line. For more information on Epson and its products, visit:

DataViz Releases Documents To Go 6 with Native File Support and More

DataViz, Inc. has announced that Documents To Go Premium Edition version 6 is now available. Documents To Go now offers native file support for Microsoft Word and Excel documents, which gives users the flexibility of using files whether they come via wireless e-mail, are transferred from an SD card, or are synchronized from a computer. Other new features include a new user interface on the desktop and handheld, the ability to use password-protected files, and language tools such as spell-check and word count.

Since its introduction in 1999, Documents To Go has been and continues to be the #1 selling Palm OS office suite as measured by market research firm NPD Intelect. In addition, Documents To Go has been selected as an in-box partner by leading Palm OS handheld manufacturers such as AlphaSmart, Garmin, Palm, and Sony.

Why is Native Document Support Important? Before native document support, the Documents To Go desktop application converted Microsoft Office files to a special handheld format that Documents To Go could open. Then the files were synchronized to the handheld. With native support, transferring and opening files gets even easier. Here are some examples where native file support is useful:

• Easily share files in a "mixed" environment. For example, you can use your Secure Digital (SD) card as a modern day "floppy disk" to exchange files between a Palm handheld and a PocketPC simply by swapping SD cards loaded with Word and Excel files. You can even use the same SD card to upload handheld files to any computer with an SD slot or card reader. There is no need to have Documents To Go installed on that desktop computer.

• Use Documents To Go along with popular wireless e-mail applications such as VersaMail to receive, edit, and send real Word and Excel files as e-mail attachments. Documents To Go can automatically open your attachments on the handheld itself so you can view and edit documents you receive. Edit any Word or Excel file in Documents To Go on your handheld, send them off as an e-mail attachment, and they will arrive at their destination as real Word or Excel files.

Other New Features in Documents To Go Premium Edition 6 In addition to native document support, several other new features are offered in Documents To Go Premium Edition 6. These include:

• Password protection: Now, password protected Word and Excel documents can be used in Documents To Go, allowing users to carry potentially sensitive information with them and safeguard it on the handheld.

• Spell-check and word count: Spell-check is now available on the handheld, so users can confidently share handheld files without first reviewing them on a desktop computer. Documents To Go includes the following spell-check dictionaries: US English, UK English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. The appropriate dictionary is installed based on the language in which Documents To Go is installed.

• Enhanced expansion card support: Users can add files directly to expansion cards, and use categories on expansion cards.

• Updated desktop and handheld user interface: The new interface facilitates adding files and changing file formats. For example, a file can be set to be synchronized as a Word or Excel file so it can be easily e-mailed or shared, as a Word To Go or Sheet To Go document to optimize size, or set to Margi’s-Presenter-to-Go format for projecting (Margi Presenter-to-Go hardware and software required). In addition, Documents To Go now offers selective sync so that the user can quickly synchronize just the one or two documents that need updating.

• Inbox To Go (formerly DataViz Mail): Inbox To Go synchronizes e-mail with attachments. Now users can synchronize attachments in native Word and Excel format to make sharing files easy or choose optimized Documents To Go formats to save space on the handheld.

System requirements:
Documents To Go Premium Edition version 6 works with Windows and Macintosh computers. It can be installed on Palm OS handhelds running OS 3.5 or higher.

Documents To Go Premium Edition version 6 is available immediately from http://www.dataviz.com and will be available by October 1 in office supply and computer retailers such as Best Buy, CompUSA, and Office Depot, as well as from online sites such as Amazon, Handango, and PalmGear. The suggested retail price is $49.95.

Upgrade pricing of $29.95 is available for all previous Documents To Go customers, including customers who received Documents To Go as bundled software with Palm or Sony Clie handhelds.

Elgato, the developer of EyeTV, will exhibit at Europe's largest Apple trade show, Apple Expo 2003, in Paris for the first time. EyeTV has become the worldwide leader in digital video recording for Macintosh since its introduction at MacWorld 2002 in New York.

Print Labels in Seconds from QuickBooks with Integrated Add-in for DYMO Labelwriter

DYMO, the global manufacturer of manual, electronic and PC labelmakers announced today its newest business productivity add-in for the LabelWriter series of label printers. The QuickBooks-integrated add-in provides users of the Basic, Pro and Premiere editions of QuickBooks for Windows with a fast and easy way to print labels. Users simply click on the LabelWriter icon in the tool bar to print quality labels in seconds, virtually eliminating the need to set up and print onto expensive sheet labels. The free add-in is available at http://www.dymo.com.

"In polling QuickBooks and other small business users we found that printing labels for customer invoices, payment mailings, purchase orders, packages, letters and files were among the top necessities of their business", said Rick Constantine, director of business development for DYMO. "With the add-in available right from the QuickBooks toolbar, users can print labels with a click of a mouse without switching screens or loading labels".

The add-in offers all the design options of DYMO Label Software. Users can customize labels with logos, images and other design features, saving money on pre-printed labels for their business. It also comes with Address Fixer, DYMO's free address correction software that checks, corrects and adds the zip+4 code to US addresses, speeding mail and eliminating the cost of returned post.

The QuickBooks-integrated add-in joins DYMO's existing business productivity add-ins. These currently support label printing from Word, Outlook, ACT!, Goldmine and Palm Desktop. These add-ins make it simple for anyone with a LabelWriter to design and print a quality label in seconds, not minutes.

The DYMO LabelWriter is a dedicated label printer that works on Windows and Macintosh computers. It is small, just 5 inches by 7 inches, and prints over 40 styles and sizes of labels including address, shipping, CD/DVD, name badge, Internet Postage labels and many more. Printing takes about 2-3 seconds per label and the 300 dpi direct thermal technology means no ink or toner to replace ever.

Information on the DYMO LabelWriter and its productivity add-ins is available from http://www.dymo.com. DYMO is a Premier Intuit Developer Network member.
