Report: Hooray, They Did It!

It's now almost 4:00 a.m. and we've done our duty for the day already. We're happy to be able to tell you that Apple, in the person of CEO Steve Jobs, has introduced a very fine family of PowerBooks that have to be among the best in the world, perhaps the very best. What's more, the new Bluetooth mouse and keyboard are finally here as well.

Some of you may remember our having fun at Apple's expense when the wireless input devices were first rumored. We imagined all kinds of problems with security, pranksters, battery life, and so on -- all in good fun, we hope everyone understands. Still, it's remarkable to us that Apple managed to address every single one of our very legitimate concerns about this kind of product, and in very sophisticated ways, from what we can tell. The keyboard's signals are encrypted, for example, and the battery-management technology will make life much simpler for users.

As for the PowerBooks, we'll wait until we've had a good morning's sleep to comment further, but these are formidable machines. The smallest model, the delightful 12-inch, now sports a DVI connection and USB 2, all this for close to what we paid for our tangerine iBook back in '99. Apple's Web sites have been updated, so go see for yourself. It's a great lineup.
