Apple Sued Over Alleged Violation of Agreement with Beatles' Company

Thursday, September 11, 2003

By Applelinks Senior Editor John H. Farr

We never thought we'd ever actually link to Faux, pardon us, Fox News, but here it is: the Beatles' lawyers, Eversheds of London, have filed suit against Apple Computer over an alleged breach of a trademark agreement reached years ago in which Steve Jobs and Apple promised to "steer clear of the music business."

The Beatles' own music company was named Apple Corps, you may remember, and its formation predates Apple, obviously. There have already been several settlements of disputes arising from whatever agreement Apple Computer and Apple Corps signed in the past. According to the Fox article, Apple has at one time or another paid up to $50 million as a result.

Comments: The last thing Apple is going to do from here on out is "steer clear of the music business," so we suspect Evershed's, McCartney, Starr, and the Lennon and Harrison estates are going to reap quite a windfall.
