Built on top of Mac OS X technologies like Quartz and Cocoa, Workspaces is a multiple workspace solution for Mac OS X . Mac OS X supports multitasking nicely, but having a bunch of applications running can clutter up your Finder pretty badly, especially if you work on a small-screened Mac like an iBook or small PowerBook. There are several ways to manage the jumble of windows. One is to hide applications that you are not immediately working in using the Finder’s Hide command. Another is to minimize open windows to the Dock, or, my personal fave -- use Unsanity’s great WindowShade X utility to collapse windows to their titlebars or to thumbnails arrayed along the sides or bottom of the screen. In practise, I’m inclined to use a combination of application hiding and window shading/thumbnailing. Another solution is a little shareware utility called Workspaces. With Workspaces, you can group applications together in a “Workspace”. Switching to an application in a workspace hides those in other workspaces, and shows the other applications in that workspace.
The Workspaces Manager dialog lets you choose which workspace an application should be in, or set it to appear in all workspaces. You can name each workspace directly in the Manager, and set key combinations to bring different workspaces forward respectively. Users who prefer to work with the mouse can use the menu available by Control-clicking the Workspaces icon in the Dock.. Workspaces features animations in the OS X motif. If you’re in a hurry, these can be disabled. I found that Workspaces performed as advertised, although there was a conflict of sorts with WindowShade X that caused the latter’s thumbnails of open windows to come “unstuck” from the screen bottom and scatter randomly. Another issue for me is that I tend to use my core suite of apps. interactively, so putting them in separate workspaces would just add another layer of complexity and slow me down. However, users with different work habits from mine might find Workspaces just what they need. DELETE IT! seeya Hi dxtr; My OS 9 environments are pretty much Microsoft free, although I still have Word 5.1, and MSN Messenger sort of snuck in when my son was working for a Microsoft subcontractor. However, Internet Explorer got installed with OS X, and since it’s not a stability-wrecker in X, I’ve kept it around for the once in a blue moon when other browsers just won’t work on a Website. As for the graphic in the column yesterday, I have a confession to make. As I noted, I cribbed the tip from Scott Kelby’s “the OS X Conversion Kit,” and Scott used an illustration of the Force Quit dialog showing MS Entourage highlighted in red. I don’t have Entourage, and the closest substitute available was IE. Since I had no idea how to induce a lockup in any OS X app on short notice, and waiting around for one to happen seemed inefficient (it’s been months since the last time it happened on my computer), I snapped a screenshot, opened it in Color It!, and, well... colored it. For illustrative purposes of course. ;-). I can't say for sure, but I suspect that's what Scott did for his screenshot in the book too, being the Photoshop whiz that he is. Charles
