FYI & Personal: Zevon's Gone

Monday, September 8, 2003

By Applelinks Senior Editor John H. Farr

I knew it was coming but I'm very sad: Warren Zevon died yesterday in his apartment in West Hollywood, approximately one year after being diagnosed with inoperable terminal cancer in both lungs. The courage, humor, and compassion with which he met his end is an example to us all.

It's moments like this, when people that I've never met but held in great esteem go out with grace and style, that tell me there's a bigger side to being here than megahertz and iTunes downloads. My father died of lung cancer way back in the '80s and showed me how the body struggles. Zevon had been working to the utmost limits of his ability all last year, turning out some of his best music ever, a triumph of the spirit worthy of remembering, over and over.

There are manufactured heros aplenty these days. I'm shutting down right now to drink a toast, crank the music loud and clear, and raise a fist up in the air. God knows he deserves it, and so do all of us.

UPDATE: A reader just emailed me a JPEG of Zevon sitting at a keyboard next to a Mac. That's hardly the point of what I wrote, quite the opposite in fact, but I thought you'd like to know. For those of you who don't know who he was, the New York Times obit by Jon Pareles is pretty good. Another reader sent me a snapshot of an autograph he got from Zevon at a bar in Wichita in '88. So far no one's had any complaints about taking up our bandwidth with my reaction to the news, not that I would change a thing in any case.
