Update: Spanish Peaks, Here We Come

Friday, September 5, 2003

By Applelinks Senior Editor John H. Farr

Your editor hasn't been out of town since gasoline was under a dollar a gallon -- at least it seems that way -- so we're taking off for a couple of nights. Rest assured your fan mail and flames will be appropriately dealt with on Sunday or maybe never, depending on which category they fall into. Read on if you're interested, we're getting too excited to type much more.

The Ford F-150 now has one less catalytic converter (ah, New Mexico) and a 24-inch glasspack in place of the OEM muffler, and does the 300 cubic inch straight six ever run better. The difference is striking, and we figure it'll literally float itself over La Veta Pass on torque alone.

Pull out your road atlas and see where we're going: one of the national forest campgrounds south of Cuchara in the Spanish Peaks area of southern Colorado. (We want this to be on the Internet in case a bear eats our tires and we don't make it back in time.) There's a dirt road up there that goes over a pass at 11,500 feet, and we're just giddy with anticipation. There's nothing like gasping for breath and freezing at the same time.

We'll let you know how the TiBook functions above the timberline and take some great photos. Have a good weekend and check back at Applelinks to see how it all turned out (details in Monday's GRACK).

[Note to staff: will somebody please post some more hard computer news ASAP, so this nonsense gets moved down the front page? Thank you very much.]
