Another Virus Warning or More Spam?

Thursday, September 4, 2003

By Applelinks Senior Editor John H. Farr

Maybe a little of both, we figure. Read on to find out if what we've been told about a nasty new email worm is just another way to get into our pockets.

Unfortunately, we can't be sure either way, but discerning thinkers among you may have a better shot. We just received an email from an anti-virus software vendor that claims a "9-11 virus" with the full name "I-Worm.Win32.Maro.5632" is about to bring wreak havoc on us all. For all we know they may be right, and we'll know in a few days. Naturally the email sender has a solution for sale. Aw, geez ...

Who can you trust? Surely not unsolicited email senders. Yet there have been other warnings about a new worm set to activate itself on or about that infamous date.

Oddly enough, after a long hiatus, this past weekend we received a bundle of Sobig worm-laden emails all at once, out of the blue. Within a single hour we had counted perhaps 75 of the little devils. Given that this amount of 100K-sized incoming messages ties up our lowly dial-up service for an ungodly long length of time (perception-wise), we decided to take up our ISP's offer of a free junk email filtering system that should catch any future virus-carrying spam before we have a chance to download it. We hate the extra step of having to log in to a special Web page to look at this stuff and get rid of it, but perhaps we'll be "safe" from another avalanche of Microsoft virus spam.

The question is, will our ISP?
