Comments: Indian Developments May Signal Trouble for Microsoft

Monday, August 11, 2003

By Applelinks Senior Editor John H. Farr

India is a hotbed of computer programmers these days, with the vast majority of them hard at work on Windows apps. The thing is, Indian entrepeneurs are discovering Linux and cutting costs by over 90 percent vs. Windows. Uh-oh ...

According to this Reuters report at ZDNet, India's pool of over 400,000 software developers, many of whom are working for major U.S. corporations, are becoming more and more interested in Linux. This interest, rather than wholesale adoption of Linux for desktop systems per se, is what analysts think is the greater danger for Microsoft.

There are in fact some significant examples of Linux adoption in Indian government organizations and elsewhere, but the growing enthusiasm for the open source software in the developer community is more interesting. If whispering in clients' ears means anything, the people hired to perform certain digital tasks may end up having more of an effect than people realize.
