This morning's news about Buy.com's supposed "iTunes killer" music download service launch was so misleading, your editor decided not to even mention it. Enough time has elapsed since that a few words are now in order, however. First of all, Buymusic.com, as the service is called, employs much more restrictive digital rights management (DRM) than Apple's iTunes Music Store, apparently because the new business was rushed into operation without taking the time to hammer out a uniform arrangement with music companies. If the comments at Slashdot are correct, some Buymusic.com downloads can only be copied onto one computer [Note: prices and copying restrictions vary.] In other words, Apple's system is much more user-friendly in ways that still set it apart from all the rest. Songs from Buymusic.com can't be loaded onto your iPod, either, due to the Windows Media Player requirement. We're waiting to hear reports about audio quality, too. Meanwhile, we note that the initial complaints by some about iTunes Music Store song quality have subsided. Fatigue, perhaps -- or are expectations now more in line with reality? Finally, the Slashdot thread linked above is actually about a new offer from distibutor CD Baby which will be of great interest to all you struggling musicians out there -- the way we understand it, for a small cut CD Baby will get your songs into the iTunes Music Store and give the world access to your music. By all means check it out, and we'll have more to say on this once we've had a chance to investigate.
