Apple says it has sold more than 6.5 million songs through the iTunes Music Store in the first two months of operation. [Figures from Macworld UK, but readily available from Apple's third quarter conference call Webcast] That's a lot of songs, and the 304,000 iPods sold during the quarter is a lot of iPods, especially considering that only 80,000 were sold in the previous three months. We'll leave it to others to wax authoritative on just what this means for the future of Apple Computer, Inc., but it's clear that sales of digital music and the technology to acquire and utilize it have helped make up for the drought in desktop sales. This is also the "Year of the Laptop," remember, a not inconsiderable trend that's also propping up the bottom line as portables outsell desktops for the first time. With this kind of interest in online music sales, Apple's vow to have a Windows-accessible version of the Music Store up and running by the end of the year should be taken very seriously. Whether this will act as a "trojan horse" to get Windows users to buy Macs is an open question, however -- although just such a sales incentive is often mentioned in conjunction with the plan.
