OS X Odyssey 350 - Checking Out The WindowShade X 3.0 Public Preview

Monday, June 23, 2003

By Applelinks Contributing Editor Charles W. Moore

WindowShade X is without doubt the third=party OS X utility I would find it hardest to get along without. I once tried using the minimize-to-the-Dock feature as a substitute for a couple of weeks, and didn't warm to it. I like having those title bars for open windows up where I can see them. I often have 10 to 20 windows open and windowshaded, and if they were all minimized to the Dock they would:
a) crowd the Dock space
b) be infuriatingly difficult to quickly distinguish from one another

Minimizing to the Dock is NOT an adequate substitute for windowshading!

Unsanity's WindowShade X haxie has always offered more features than just restoring the windowshading function from the Classic Mac OS, and the latest WindowShade X 3 public preview release adds even more. You can assign the following actions to the minimize button and a double-click on the window title:
• Minimize the window to the Dock
• "Windowshade" the window to its title bar to quickly peek below or get it out of the way

• Minimize-In-Place the window so it becomes really small so you can move it out of the way yet still see what is going on. When you mouse over the minimized window, the title appears along with an icon identifying the application. Click on the minimized window and it expands to regular size again, Cool.

• Make the window transparent so you can continue working in it while seeing things under it
• Hide the application quickly
• Do nothing and ignore the action (sometimes it is quite useful as well).

These actions can also be set on per-application basis so you can configure your workspace to be convenient for you.

New in WindowShade X 3 Public Preview is the Minimize-In-Place functionality, allowing you to minimize windows "in place" to a much smaller images representing windows. This is similar to minimizing to Dock, except that you have much more control over the appearance of the minimized windows and you can drag them freely around your screen.

Unsanity cautions that this version is not final, therefore it may contain bugs. Since the final version of WindowShade X 3 will appear in the future, this Public Preview release will expire on September 1, 2003. By that time, a newer version of WindowShade X 3 will be available, possibly with more features than this Public Preview release.

New in v3.0 Public Preview:
• Introduced Minimize-In-Place functionality.
• Updated for Application Enhancer 1.3.
• Various speed optimizations.
• More features are coming in the final WindowShade X 3.0 release.

I installed the WindowShade X 3.0 Public Preview last evening, and so far it's working fine. I don't know yet how much I will utilize the Minimize-in-Place function, but it's nice to have it as another option.

System requirements:
• Mac OS X 10.2 or higher
• Application Enhancer (free haxie from Unsanity)

WindowShade X is $10.00 shareware, no upgrade fee for 3.0 for registered users of earlier versions..

Unburying the Desktop

From Chris Long

C:

re -- unburying the Desktop;

I hate to sound like a broken record or a shill for a company I know little about, but you folks NEED to get yerselves a copy of QuicKeys! I've used QuicKeys for probably 10 years now, and it saves me HOURS of dinking around. I've had a "go to Desktop & hide all other apps" macro programmed into my escape key for 10 years now, probably. It's such a habit that I find myself hitting ESCAPE on any Mac I happen to be sitting at. using macros in this fashion, to do small multi-step tasks is WELL WORTH the up front investment -- the time savings is unbelievable. I believe that there's a new version available as a demo download -- go get it & try it out!

Thanks. I have a copy, but other readers may not, and it's good to know where it can be found.
