When we first read this Macworld UK piece on what people are saying about the upcoming IBM PowerPC 970 chips, we thought: "Gobi, schmobi!" What's not to like about 900MHz bus speeds and 2.5 GHz? But something resembling a pattern is coming out of the mist. As long as the world is taking a look, we thought we would too. If the Forbes.com and Microprocessor Review sources quoted by Macworld UK are anywhere near correct, a gusher of IBM PowerPC 970 chips offering 64-bit computing at multi-gigahertz speeds will sooner or later find their way into new Apple hardware. That kind of firepower is more than one needs for email and reading this news page, so "Gobi" will most likely find homes in consumer machines, more or less extending the G3/G4 dichotomy existing today. That's all so vague, it's not even a rumor (and way less than brilliant), but you'll notice we never even mentioned Motorola. Call what we've just written our Monday morning "keep the faith" pep talk, and have a great day.
