OS X Odyssey 314 - State Of The Odyssey

Thursday, May 1, 2003

By Applelinks Contributing Editor Charles W. Moore

I guess I can say I’m pretty much fully switched now. I’m running Mac OS X on both the iBook and the Pismo these days, and I haven’t booted into OS 9 for a couple of weeks -- then only for a day or so. I’m up to “Untitled Document 180” in Tex Edit Plus X, which isn’t a record yet -- I got over the 200 mark once in OS 9 -- but it does indicate a long stretch of uptime without a restart of either the application or the system.

I also don’t seem to be hitting an extreme slowdown threshold after several days uptime in OS X any more, presumably because I’ve been using Cocktail and MacJanitor to run system maintenance routines lately.

Another factor may be that I’ve been using Safari rather than Mozilla or Camino for browsing. The latter two applications *seem* to exacerbate a memory leak problem, and 0S X has definitely been behaving better since I’ve been using Safari. However, I don’t want to make too much of this, because I’m not sure that the other browsers were really the troublemakers. It could be just the more assiduous system maintenance I’ve been doing.

Speaking of Safari, I haven’t found much to complain about with the 1.0 Beta 2 (v73) build. It’s a solid, stable, fast browser. Great stuff for software that still beta. I wish the Download Manager was more like the one in iCab, and that Safari could save Web page content as plain text, and I still think the “brushed metal” interface is ugly, but otherwise I like Safari a lot.

Browsers are one of the biggest reasons why I wouldn’t want to go back to working in OS 9 every day. Neither Safari nor Camino is available in Classic, and Mozilla development for the old OS stopped with version 1.2.1, which works very well, but the OS X browsers are better. Even iCab.

The things that bug me in OS X are still speed (lack of -- especially on the Pismo), flaky mouse and keyboard response (“misfires” and the necessity to double pump frequently), and certain Finder behaviors. OS 9 is still faster, slicker, more responsive, and more refined.

Nevertheless, I don’t see myself going back. Too many features and too much cool software are only available in OS X, and it is not just the future, but more and more the present.

I’m running OS 10.2.4 on the Pismo, and 10.2.1 on the iBook. Widely reported troubles such as kernel panics with 10.2.5 are not encouraging, especially since I use and need USB hubs, which are one of the documented problematical 10.2.5 issues, with both machines. I’ve also been spooked by battery and modem problems associated with 10.2.4 on iBooks, although it works just great on the Pismo. Hopefully, 10.2.6 will beat a relatively bug-free version of Jaguar, and available soon.
