We have a personal interest in this one, as regular readers know. Your editor is living proof that unrequited PowerBook lust can be bad for your health. No, nobody's sick at our place -- but we do spend an inordinate amount of time reading everything we can find on the subject of 12-inch aluminum PowerBooks, and we're not getting enough exercise. No reason to load you down with links: just visit MacSurfer every day and hit all the relevant reviews, or do a Web search. But today we followed several discussion threads (via MacSurfer) and learned that yes, here and there you may find a few manufacturing flaws, or are they merely consequences? To wit, some of the little Als wobble. That's right, wobble. Apparently there is even a recommended procedure for straightening the beastie that sounds to us like it would probably work. A tad scary, perhaps: you basically turn everything off and mash the corners down on a flat surface (DO NOT TRY THIS without reading all the details -- visit the Apple Support site and search for relevant keywords, we are advised and so advise you). Some of the LCD screens aren't exactly centered, either. A minor thing, perhaps. Here and there a missing screw, small potatoes. And some of them run rather warmly. On the other hand, just about everyone seems to love the 12-inch PowerBook's size, keyboard, construction quality, and performance. You also have to remember, this is the first version. Apple has a "problem" with first versions because the hardware is so desirable. Everyone knows what it's like when the products are introduced and they have to wait weeks for delivery. In other words, most of us want 'em so bad we take the first batch off the production lines and hope for the best. Usually everything is fine, and that certainly seems to be the case with Little Al. But absolute perfection is an elusive goal, right? Then again, our original tangerine iBook is, well, "perfect." Except that the charging light has always stayed green and never changes to gold. And the plastic on the bottom has a couple of funny splotches in the coloring. And the hard drive has always made weird little noises. See what we mean?
