Mount.app 1.0.1 Mounts Disk Images Faster Than Disk Copy

Mount.app 1.0.1 Mounts Disk Images Faster Than Disk Copy

Friday, March 28, 2003

By Applelinks Contributing Editor Charles W. Moore

Tired of “waiting for Disk Copy Helper”? Mount.app is claimed to mount disk images way faster than pokey Disk Copy. Sounds good to me. I decided to check it out.

To install Mount.app, just mount the disk image using pokey Disk Copy, then drag the Mount application file to anywhere on your hard disk, ideally the Applications folder. (To uninstall Mount.app, just drag the Mount.app file to the trash. You can also delete ~/Library/Preferences/us.houchin.mount.plist.)

Mount.app will mount a disk image file on your system without “waiting for Disk Copy Helper.” It also supports mounting disk images that require the acceptance of a license agreement. At this time Mount.app does not perform any verification of the disk image before asking the system to mount it.

To mount a disk image file using Mount.app, you can:
• Drag the file onto the Mount.app application icon
• Select “Mount...” from the File menu
• Select “Open With?Mount” from the Finder’s contextual menu

I tested Mount.app against Disk Copy with both a fairly large disk image (Camino) and a small one (PDF Plugin). When I double-clicked the Camino disk image, it took Disk Copy 46 seconds to mount and display the contents. Mount.app, sarting from cold, took 30 seconds, or 50 percent less time to mount and display the Camino disk image, but Mount.app does not perform any verification of the disk image before asking the system to mount it, while Disk Copy does. However, where Mount.app really excels in speed is when the program is already started up when you drag a disk image to it, in which case it took just 6 seconds to mount and display the Camino disk image.

Six seconds was also the time Mount.app took to mount the small, PDF plugin disk image with the application already open. Disk Copy and Mount.app took 35 seconds and 29 seconds respectively starting from scratch.

Mount.app’s biggest advantage seems to be realized if you keep it running in the background. Of course you can do that with Disk Copy too. When Disk Copy was already started up, it took just 16 seconds to mount the Camino disk image, although that’s still 10 seconds slower than Mount.app.

If the “stay open after mounting image” option is selected in Mount.app preferences, Mount.app will stay open after mounting a disk image when the disk image file is dragged onto the Mount.app application icon, or when the user double-clicks on the disk image file. If this option is not selected, Mount.app will immediately quit after mounting a disk image, but only if Mount.app had not previously been running. If you start up Mount.app and then ask it to mount an image file, Mount.app will stay running until you explicitly quit the application.

If the “hide application after mounting image” option is selected, and Mount.app does not automatically quit after mounting the requested disk image, Mount.app will hide itself after mounting the disk image.

To run Mount.app, just drop disk images files on Mount.app, or set the Finder to use Mount.app to open them.

If you find that Mount.app works for you, you can configure your system to automatically open all disk image files with Mount.app. This must be done for each disk image file extension. To make this change, select a disk image file and then select ”File > Get Info” from the Finder’s menus. In the “Open With” portion of the Get Info panel, select “Mount” from the pop-up menu and then click on the “Change All...” button. If you are having problems getting the system to start using Mount.app, you may need to logout or restart.

To install Mount.app, just copy Mount.app to anywhere on your disk (but putting it in /Applications is highly recommended) To Uninstall Mount.app, delete the Mount.app application file, as well as ~/Library/Preferences/us.houchin.Mount.plist

Features include:
• Mounts pretty much any disk image file
• Handles disk images that include license agreements
• Can be set to stay open and to automatically hide after mounting an image
• Can be set to automatically accept license agreements
• Mount.app is setup to be localizable. Contact me if you’d like to help translate the user interface into other languages

New in this version:
• Fixed a bug preventing Mount.app from automatically quitting after mounting an image from double-click or drag and drop
• Fixed a bug preventing a user from reselecting auto accept license if they had previously selected this and then decided to go back to normal license warnings
• Fixed a bug that prevented the display of error messages in some situations in Mac OS X 10.2.4
• If you scroll the license window for one disk image and then open a second disk image that also has a license agreement, the second agreement now be scrolled to the top
• Added the ability to copy text from the Help Window
• Added the ability to have the system speak the contents of the Help window
• Fixed it so that if user cancelled decryption when the password was requested, Mount.app doesn’t return an error
• Startup behaviour was changed for the situation where the preferences are set to hide Mount.app after mounting an image. In 1.0, if the user started Mount.app by double-clicking the application itself, the application automatically hid itself as soon as it was launched. However, in this usage scenario, the user probably wanted to adjust the preferences, so they would have to then unhide the application after launched. In 1.0.1, if Mount.app is started by double-clicking the application itself, it does not hide regardless of the value of the hide preference. If you’re starting Mount.app automatically on login, you should check the Hide button in your Login Items preferences to get Mount.app to hide after it starts.
• Added complete French and German localizations and partial Japanese localization (just the menus; I’d love to have a volunteer to translate the dialogs and the help file to Japanese)
• Replaced the PDF readme with a simple (and significantly smaller!) text file
System requirements:
• Mount.app should work on any Mac OS X 10.1 or later system.

Mount.app is freeware /tradeware

Camino’s Bookmarks Window

From Timo Reger

I have to say, sight unseen, that I prefer the Bookmarks Window.

Here’s my perspective: I use a G3 iMac with a 13.5” viewable monitor. While Pop-Out Drawers are cool, on my computer they don’t so much pop out as they stay where they are, and squish the app window over to the left. And in some applications - such as OmniWeb - when you close the pop-out drawer, the window does not unsquish itself. Very annoying.

When I get that 30” widescreen lcd display, I will love pop-out drawers. Until then, they are a pretty nuisance, and I prefer the overlay window.

Hi Timo;

I use PowerBooks and an iBook, so I appreciate where you’re coming from. However, I still think the popout drawers are cool and slick.

Not a deal-killer either way, though, IMHO.
