It is rumored that the next release version of Apple's Safari browser will feature Mozilla/Camino/Netscape style tabbed browsing. However, the cross-pollenization is also working in the other direction as well. The latest nightly builds of the open source, Mozilla-based Camino Web browser has dropped its pop-out bookmarks drawer which has been replaced with a Safari-style bookmarks window that also displays the browser's history. As Camino Developer Mike Pinkerton told PCPro News: 'Why did we shamelessly copy Safari? Well, it's a good idea for starters. We also have plans to extend it in several ways in which they haven't which will make it even more useful. The jury is still out on if we'll keep it in the window or if we'll move it into a separate bookmark window. It should be easy to do should we decide to. It's also not that pretty, so don't start bitching about how crappy it looks. It works, the polishing comes later." A Google search field similar to Safari's is also reportedly forthcoming in Camino.
The latest nightly build of Camino can be downloaded from I brought it down last evening to check out the new bookmarks window. I can't say as I'm sure it's an improvement. I rather like the pop-out drawer.
I also found the interim build pretty buggy, and got three unexpected quits in about 15 minutes of use. I've reverted back to Camino 0.7 for now, which I;ve been using daily for about three weeks, and which I've found admirably fast, stable, and reliable -- my favorite all-round Mac OS X browser among the current candidates.
If you haven't tried Camino, you really should. Changes since Chimera 0.6 include:

Re: Prebinding? It's BUGGIN me ... HTML editor for OSX From Michael Snider, Charles, Prebinding is what is going on when and installer says it is optimizing the new software for use. Jaguar does it automatically the first time an app is launched after a reboot. Your correspondent's Java problem would likely be solved by moving to Jaguar. Is he reinstalling 1.3.1 after having installed 1.4.1? I'm not sure 1.4.1 is supported in earlier version of MacOS X, but if that's the case, just type "sudo ln -sfh 1.3.1 CurrentJDK" in terminal and 1.3.1 will be the default.
Peace,
From Jennifer H. Milyko Morning Charles, Thank you for the pointer to Xoptimize. I'll check it out. As for the Java/GIS program issue, it's working now. It boiled down to a file type problem. My face is red... ...Jennifer... From Chris Long Hey C: Do you or any of your readers know of ANY technique/hack to get OSX (jag) to display file/icon labels on the finder in plain black type & NOT that hideous and hard-to-read outlined white type with the shadow behind it? i sure would like to fix this -- believe it or not (!) it's one of my biggest beefs with OSX.
thanks,
Hi Chris;
Personally, I don't find the OS X icon label font offensive, but different strokes. ;-)
I don't know how to change it either. Perhaps if there's a way, some readers will let us know.

Try BBEDIT LITE -- still available (even though officially replaced by textwrangler) -- it's free/wonderful! C
Hi Chris,
I love BBEdit Lite for it's superb search & replace engine, but for an html editor I much prefer Tex Edit Plus because of its incredibly superb AppleScript implementation, which facilitates customizing HTML markup functions to one's exact needs.
