I'm experimenting with DEVONtechnology's DEVONthink 1.5.2 Personal Edition database program this week. I've barely scratched the surface of what DEVONthink is capable of has yet, but so far I'm finding it very cool, and as is typical of German software, solidly conceived, designed, and implemented. I'm planning to do a full review of DEVONthink for Moore's Views & Reviews, but here's what I've discovered so far. DEVONthink works on a "group" metaphor. When you create a new group by checking and icon in the toolbar, a new folder icon appears in the left pane of the interface window. You can then drag files into that group's folder from the Desktop, or create new documents in DEVONthink itself to be stored in the database or exported.
The contents of a group folder are displayed in the right pane when the folder icon is highlighted in the left column. You can click the folders "flippy" triangle to display a list of the folder's contents. Click on a particular document icon in the left pane and it will be displayed in the right pane.
Double click on a document icon when the folder contents are displayed (a handy slider on the toolbar adjusts the icon sizes), and it will open in a separate document window for editing.
Groups may consist of text documents as shown above (plain text, RTF/RTFD, Simpletext files, PDF, source codes, HTML, XML are supported), or graphics files (the usual Mac compatible formats are supported).
Very slick, and that's just the rudiments of what this program can do. Without the need for indexing, DEVONthink fully or semi-automatically classifies elements, lists similar contents and words immediately using fuzzy algorithms, finds and compares text and even images, summarises texts intelligently and provides high performance concordance tools.
As a Cocoa application it's perfectly integrated into Mac OS X including it's own services for storing and summarising text clippings, has advanced text editing functions including rulers and provides a Finder-like interface with contextual menus, Dock menus, different views and drag-and-drop. Finally, DEVONthink is based on the powerful and language independent DEVONtechnology which is suitable for a wide range of applications.
System requirements:
DEVONthink Personal Edition 1.5.2 runs on Mac OS X 10.1 or higher and is immediately available as a demo download from http://www.devon-technologies.com. It must be registered for US$ 44,95 after the evaluation period.DEVONthink Personal Edition 1.5.2 is now much more friendly to test drivers who only test the application only now and then, it permits 30 hours of usage time before showing a registration reminder, instead of simply counting the days from the time of the first launch.

Prebinding? APM Tuner Downoald Source APM Tuner From Peter Vanacore Hi Charles, I've had several problems with dial-up internet in Jaguar in both my Pismo and my wife's PM 867DP. My Pismo often changes settings in Internet Connect. Sometimes it switches to an IrDA connection, and at other times it changes account name. Once I lost all my dial-up settings. My wife's machine is solid as a rock, except for the dial-up. It has caused many reboots when it gets hung while disconnecting. Force quitting Internet Connect and relaunching the Finder do not help. Pete Vanacore
Hi Pete;
I guess I've been fortunate. The incident I related yesterday is the first dialup trouble I've had with Jaguar.

From Jennifer H. Milyko Hello Charles, I know I read about this in the Odyssey but can't seem to find it nor was it readily available to me searching the Knowledge Base at Apple. I've recently updated from OS 10.1.3 to 10.1.5 on my G4/733Mhz/640RAM. I'm attempting to run a GIS program written for Java (supposedly for use with Mac OS X and other UNIX OSes) with little success. The term "prebinding" bubbled to the surface of my limited technical knowledge and it occurred to me maybe I was remiss in some maintenance that would clear up the problem. So my question(s) boil down to this: What is prebinding? When does it need to be done? Does it get done automatically when I update my system software from the Software Update panel? Or do I need to do it manually? It seems like what I read in your column had something to do with using the Terminal to execute...Do you think this would even help? Also, I have tried to reinstall Java 1.3.1 and keep getting an error. It won't reinstall. (At least I _think_ I am running 1.3.1, I can't find a place that tells me for sure but I can't find any other apparent versions of Java on my machine, either.) Thanks in advance for your advice, Jennifer Milyko
Hi Jennifer;
I'm no authority on prebinding, but I think you may be referring to the letter tha appears below from Odyssey 247.
I'm not going to be much help with your Java problem. Beats me. If anyone out there wants to wade in with suggestions, please feel free.
Xoptimize prebinds all executables and shared libraries such that the applications load and launch faster. It accomplishes this task by invoking the update_prebinding command provided with Mac OS X. This is the same kind of optimization that the installer performs whenever it does the Optimizing System task during installation. The difference is that Xoptimize can prebind applications and frameworks that were installed by means other than an installer package.
At the moment, it only prebinds applications and frameworks installed on the boot volume. This is due to a limitation in the Apple provided update_prebinding tool and is not something the author of Xoptimize has any control over. Hopefully, this will be fixed in the future.
Release 1.00 removes all references to memory usage. It was originally there solely to work around a bug in update_prebinding that was fixed prior to the 10.0.4 release of Mac OS X. As such, it served no purpose and was removed. However, updating the prebinding information is still a very memory intensive operation and, as such, machines with 256MB or less will likely slow to a crawl as the prebinding process progresses.
It is recommended that update_prebinding not be run on machines that have very little free hard drive space combined with less than 256MB of RAM. Because Mac OS X can dynamically grow the virtual memory swapfiles to 4GB, a machine with less than 4 GB of free hard drive space can run out of memory simultaneously with the drive becoming completely full. Rebooting causes the dynamically allocated swap space to be shrunk back to a single 80MB chunk.
As Classic uses a huge chunk of memory, it is recommended that Classic be shutdown before running Xoptimize.
If Xoptimize is going to be executed on a machine with little memory and/or a relatively full hard drive, it is recommended that the machine is rebooted first and Xoptimize is executed as the first and only application.
Xoptimize should only be usd on filesystems that are in a good state. If there is any question, boot the system from a CD or from an alternative disk/partition and run repair the filesystem using Disk First Aid.
To learn more about prebinding, go to a Terminal window (or post-April Project Builder) and look at the update_prebinding man page (i.e. type man update_prebinding in terminal window).
Finally, a reminder that Xoptimize, itself, does not actually modify any files directly. It is a user interface for a tool-- update_prebinding-- that is provided by Apple. Xoptimize uses update_prebinding in a fashion that is documented and supported by Apple. Xoptimize does not use any undocumented APIs.

I don't know what happened to it either. I think the developer abandoned it. I emailed him and asked if I could host it and received no response. I'm taking that to mean he doesn't object. I have put it up at: From David Reaves Howdy Charles! Any idea where I can get a copy of "APM Tuner" for OS8-9? The link has been dead for some time now, and I'd really like to try it to see if it helps my Powerbook's drive.
Thanks!
Hi David;
CMG above has posted the OS X version, but says he doesn't have the Classic version. ;-( At this time, I'm not aware of any source for the Classic version.
