Capping our floppy disk support in OS X week in OS X Odyssey, I was remiss in commenting that "Apparently there are software hacks available that can restore floppy support for the internal floppy drives in the beige G3s," without providing a link to the said hacks. Reader Timothy E.Larson writes: Mr. Moore, If you know of any "software hacks" to enable this support, please post the links! I'm going to make the jump to Jaguar soon, and I know that for my world at least, the floppy is NOT dead.
Thanks!
So Tim, and anyone else out there with a beige G3 or G3 AIO, or WallStreet, etc., (see list below) running OS X and missing floppy drive support, check out this OSX/FAQ article:
A direct link to the OS X floppy driver hack page is:
They note:
This driver is for Apple-branded floppy hardware as used in the PowerBook G3 Series (Wallstreet and Mainstreet/PDQ), the Power Macintosh G3 (beige), and others. This driver is -not- for third-party floppy drives of any kind. Third party drives are either USB devices or ATA devices, while Apple floppy drives are raw Sony, Mitsubishi, or Panasonic drive mechanisms attached directly to the motherboard controller. This driver will not help you in any way with third-party devices, so don't even try.
The current version of this driver (0.96) was released on June 22, 2002.
Machines believed to work:
All other PCI PowerMacs with SWIM3 floppy hardware should work except PowerBook 2400 and 3400, but other machines are untested.
Known Bugs:
If you try this, let us know how you make out. Charles How does one install CUPS support for the serial port in OSX? From Chris Kilner Hi Charles:
I just got around to reading your floppy drive series of articles.
The modern equivalent to floppy disk convenience is the USB flash drive (sometimes called thumb drives or keychain drives). I was an early adopter (16MB), but you can get these drives in capacities from 16MB-1GB for anywhere from $0.25-$1.00 per megabyte. They have much greater capacity, are faster, easier to carry in your pocket, and more durable. I formatted mine as DOS so I can use it to transfer files between home and the PC at work. Also, with regard to your memory leak or whatever, have you tried MacJanitor to run the OS X maintenance scripts?
Peace,
Hi Chris;
The USB Flash drives sound great. However, in my particular circumstances, transferring files between a Pismo and a PowerBook 1400, they are not a lot of help because the 1400 doesn;t support USB and can;t be upgraded to do so.
I agree that these devices would be perfect for quick file transfers between the Pismo and my iBook.
Checking out MacJanitor is on my to do list.
Charles Floppy support in Mac OS X From Anonymous Charles, I have always had Floppy support in Mac OS X for 1.4 MB DOS and Mac formatted floppies with my external SmartDisk USB floppy drive model number FDUSB-TM2. 800 kbyte floppies though don't read in it. And I can only format 1.4 MB floppies with Mac OS X. It is powered by the Mac itself, so if you are using a Flat Panel iMac, put it in the middle USB port.
Sincerely,
How does one install CUPS support for the serial port in OSX? From Peter J. Pedersen Dear Charles W. Moore, As an aside to the intense discussion on floppy disks and OSX, S J Nielsen notes that Jaguar's Printing Services includes a subset of CUPS - which unfortunately does NOT support serial ports even though standard CUPS does. He goes on to say, "All of the necessary components are available on the Web for the adventurous user to install, but it's just a little more complicated than I'm willing to get into." I have been trying for some time now to find out how to accomplish this since I own a (still very satisfactorily functioning) Epson Stylus Color 600 (that connects to my WallStreet's serial port) - probably the last Epson printer NOT to be OSX supported by Epson. Asiding for a moment this comment to an aside, I find Epson's printers highly satisfactory and very reliable but Epson support and MacOS programs to be even mor unsatisfactory! Could you please contact S J Nielsen and ask him to either describe this installation process, OR provide a link to a page that offers this description? It is rather tiring having to reboot into OS9 every time I need to print out from the WS, and I am certain that there are other OSX adopters out here that share my desperation...
Regards,
Hi Peter;
I've forwarded your letter to Steve.
