If there was ever any proof that Apple Computer has better things to do that peruse Mac Web sites, the string of articles we've posted here about a few PowerBook G4 12-inch owners returning their new machines because they ran uncomfortably hot is it. We wish they'd seen them, though. There may in fact be a solution, according to a reader who investigated a discussion thread at the Apple Support site. It appears that on some machines, the battery charger falsely senses that the battery isn't fully charged and continues to charge, thus causing some overheating. Recalibrating the battery should solve this. Whether or not this is the same overheating issue that caused some owners to give up on the 12-inch is not a question we can answer. We also regret that we have no time to chase down Apple Support discussion threads. And we truly regret that Apple lacks a liason person to pass information on these kinds of issues to Web sites like this one and then to you, our readers. Perhaps this is an oversight. In any case the lack of communication on this aspect of a new product has cost at least a few sales. Bottom line: the new 12-inch PowerBook is a great product that shouldn't have a heat problem. If yours feels too hot, check the battery and calibrate it again, twice if necessary. The reader who told us about this reports that "the problem has gone away." Good!
