IBM has released the eagerly anticipated Jaguar update for ViaVoice for Mac OS X However, you will have to update to at least Mac OS version 10.2.2 in order to use it. IBM says this download is designed to provide clearer dictation and playback. I downloaded the updater file over the weekend -- it's only 638 MB, but since I'm still running OS 10.2.1, I haven't installed it yet. However, early reports on forums are somewhat promising. I've been able to get ViaVoice X to work with Jaguar, and while performance is fine once you coax it into action, that can be a bit of a tussle. Still have to close the program before putting the PowerBook to sleep, as it will refuse to work upon wakeup if you don't. New in IBM ViaVoice for Mac OS X (10.2.2) Update Version 3.0.2 The following files and corresponding fixes are included in this update:
audcore.so
Speakpad
IEControler
I don't doubt that there arealso a number of smaller, undocumented bugfixes and enhancements as well.
The minimum hardware requirements for running ViaVoice for Mac OS X (the original release -- not the update) are: MAC OS X version 10.1
You can find the updater download site here: Disconnection Problem in OS X From Frank O'Connor Nice article again, Charles ... I'm following your switch with interest and much of what you're saying is spot on. :) When I upgraded to Eudora 5.2 recently I found that the installer synched the mail folders across versions ... so all my signatures, mailboxes, prefs and the like are in a common file location - and I didn't have to do anything to set it up this way. (No aggravation at all - a pleasant surprise.) What I'd like to know is why other software producers who offer trad Mac and OS X variants of their software don't follow the Qualcomm lead. It makes so much damn sense. :) Regards,
Hi Frank;
Yes, over the years I've found Eudora to be one of the most sensibly-conceived and user-friendly peices of Mac software.
Charles From Herbert Goodfriend Charles, Since installing 10.1.5 (the first version of X that I ever installed), I am getting disconnected after 5-10 minutes of idleness. Usually the Internal Modem status window shows that I am still connected after the disconnect occurs. I have seen other complaints like this on some Mac e-mail lists, usually saying that the problem goes away once Jaguar has been installed. Apple does not seem to acknowledge the problem. I called Apple Tech Support and, once I told the technician that the problem occurs when I am idle, he insisted that ISP must be disconnecting me. However, in OS 8.6 and 9.x I never had this problem and the ISP insists that they have not changed anything at their end. Also, this does not explain why the Internal Modem status display does not indicate the disconnection. I do have the System Preferences set up to not automatically disconnect. I would appreciate any suggestions or reports from you and/or other readers.
Sincerely,
Hi Herb;
I get about the same frequency of dropped connections in OS 9 as I do in OS X -- a lot worse since I was obliged to change ISPs (only one available here now) last month. This may be a multifaceted problem.
FWIW, I seem to be getting more disconnects in Jaguar than I was in 10.1.4, but I think it's the new ISP.
Charles
