David Zeiler's Mac Experience column in the Baltimore Sun is remarkable for two reasons: first, that it exists at all, given the attitude that has existed for years at the Sun, and second, because while extolling the virtues of a two-button mouse, he takes a serious look at why Apple has kept the single-button model around so long. Notice we didn't say this one-button mouse tradition (and that's what it is) actually makes sense: traditions rarely do. As David relates, "I realize that some in the Mac community may consider this blasphemy. The one-button mouse, perhaps out of sheer longevity, has become an article of faith with many Mac users. Whenever the issue of Apple adding a second button or a scroll wheel to its mouse comes up, words fly." If you've never used anything but a single-button mouse, you'd probably be surprised how much fun things like scroll wheels and programmable buttons are. And OS X has built-in support for third-party mice, so trying one is as easy as plugging it in and laying your land on it. Your editor has for years used a simple utility that brings up contextual menus with a single-button mouse (no control key required), and we still find ourselves using that instead of the programmed second button on our own third-party mouse. In any event, we agree with David that Apple needs to retire the single-button mouse. We don't think they will, though, given its quasi-religious significance -- and if this were going to happen, it would have been done before the "switcher" campaign...
