Many of you will recall the absurdly biased column by Dave Kearns for Network World that I spoke about here on September 24th. Mr. Kearns attacked a certain Apple switcher commercial featuring Janie Porche and her digital camera adventures, obviously not believing the truth of what was protrayed. Well, guess what? I just heard from Janie's father... To refresh your memory, here is the offending paragraph from Mr. Kearns' column: "There's Janie Porche, the young woman who saved Christmas. It seems her poor dad needed to spend hours downloading drivers for his new digital camera (evidently her dad is still connected to the 'Net at 300 baud). Porche just "put a cord" between the camera and her Powerbook, and it automatically downloaded all the pictures. Imagine that - I wonder which brand of camera THAT was!" Janie's dad contacted me because he wanted to set the record straight. And here is what I learned, point by point, from a man with almost 25 years experience in the computer world who uses PCs "extensively" in his work: The camera was a Kodak DX 3600 with a USB interface for transmitting image files. Unfortunately however, the Porche's home PC didn't have the required USB port. (And for the record, these folks have a Roadrunner cable modem connection.) "Tasks - purchase USB port - install driver - driver not compatible with Kodak camera software - go to Kodak site for new driver - get Windows 98 to recognize new hardware and install new drivers. All of this did take several hours, not only in the doing of the work, but in determining what was wrong and what I needed to do to correct it!" Frustrated by the above, Janie did just what the commercial says she did: connected the camera to her Powerbook, which promptly recognized the attached camera and began downloading the images. Every word in the commercial is true, whether longtime PC user Kearns believes it or not.
